Ohhh..............Sharon................I need some input from you since you

competed. I took up competitive bodybuilding 4 years ago when I was 54. I have

a ton of trouble with the diet the last couple months. I can't seem to get

below 9%BF..........any suggestions for me?? Oh, and I assume you can figure

out I'm also " hormonally deprived......... " (post menopausal). LOL I think

that has alot to do with it. I have pix on the BFL site if you want to look

and offer some suggestions.

If you'd rather email me privately it's annaz@...

HI there ...When I competed in the 1980s ..I was all natural..no

steroids and I never got my bodyfat lower than 9%. I am 5'3 " tall and

at competition I weighed 109..!! I had started at a weight of 130

and 22% bodyfat. It took me 9 months to get in competition shape.

Starting slowly and ramping it up at the end. When you do you carb

load and carb depelete you will see dramatic end results. I'd be

happy to outline my complete load and depletion formula for you if

you wish.

I'm 5-4, maintain an off season weight of around 128-130 and shoot for 119 or so

for competition. Carbs are my problem, my body seems to suck them right up just

LOOKING at them. LOL All natural here too, I take very little in the way of

supplementation. Some Omega 3, good multivitamin, CLA Extreme, Kre- Alkyline

and a couple of fat burners. Don't know just HOW effective they are, but the

labels sound encouraging. :>)

My goal is to have visible abs...........I KNOW I have them there lurking under

the 9%, just would LOVE to have them show after all the reps I'm doing. Having

had 3 kids I still have a wad of loose skin, and cannot seem to rid myself of

that. I suggested a little tuck job, but here on the group told me I

should not do that. , I am too cheap to spend that kind of money anyway,

so don't worry. :>)

Thanks so much and as far as having Abs...I did ... in one competition my abs

were outstanding. It took a lot of hard work and I'm not kidding. I trained for

2 hrs a day 7 days a week just cardio..then at least 1 1/2 hours of weight

lifting and 1 hour of posing. Then planning food intake..counting

calories...and tanning..whew!! it was a lot of work. When people ask me these

days...why don't you continue to compete? my answer is ...are you crazy????!!!!

I love to lift and love to do my cardio..but I have no desire to ever be 9%

bodyfat again. I am content to wear a size 8 and eat healthy..with the

occasional treat now and then. Living happily with yourself is a great

reward...

I do short bursts of cardio these days...15 to 20 intense walks on the

treadmill with elevation 4 times a morning. Of course, I literally live in the

gym so it's easy for me to do that. If you work and have to catch your workouts

in the evening I recommend jump roping during each commercial when you watch

your favorite show..such as desperate housewives..:-)

It would be nice if I had the time to do all that which you did. Unfortunately,

I have to put my workout in the first thing in the morning or it wouldn't get

done. Hubby and I dairy/hog/crop farm, so once I am out the door in the

morning, it is pretty much out all day till I come in at night, between 8-9pm.

That is when I schedule my cardio when I do it pre-contest. I am about ready

for collapse at that point, so 20-30 min. of cardio is about all I can hack. My

" job " is VERY physically demanding, not like I'm at a desk all day, so there is,

hopefully, some " exercise " benefit from hauling around 40 pound pails of feed,

lifting stuff above my head (milker units to hang on the pipeline), bags of

woodshavings up to my shoulder to carry to the barn..........(right now that is

on an uphill walk with ICE.......Yuck).........it would be great if I could work

in a gym. Best of both worlds. Right now I have the worst of them.

Wow .. it sounds like your lifestyle is very demanding. Do you count

calories? Also I'd look closely at the dairy in your diet. .. hard to avoid

since you have a dairy!! I gave up dairy, red meat, pork, white carbs and

alcohol and sugar for competition.

Looking at your competition pictures I have to say you've done a great

job...it's always a work in progress...have you got anyone to help you with your

posing? I learned so much from some of the other people in the gym here.

Sharon,

Welcome to the group! It never ceases to amaze me the " walks of life " that join

this group. I feel so lucky to be a member and get all of the benefits from

both professionals and just every day people trying to lead a healthly

lifestyle. At age 61, you certainly can provide some advise to some of us women

who are not too far behind you. May I ask what brought you to this BFL group?

I'm looking forward to receiving some suggestions/support/advice from you

(hopefully). :)

Hi Danna Anne...

I had some familiarity with the bob phillips body for life program several

years ago. A few of my clients were doing the challenge and I helped train

them. My gosh, now that I think of it , that was 6 yrs. ago!! My how time flies.

With the new year upon us, I thought I might be of some help with exercise

suggestions and such. I have a youtube account now and I'm putting exercise

videos on this site for people to get new ideas about working out. I am here to

help with 28 yrs. of experience.

Sharon,

I did go to YouTube and checked out a couple of the exercises. It's nice to

have an example to look at to ensure that I'm doing it correctly myself. What

would you suggest for women over 45 wanting to attack the belly fat?

Thanks,

Dana Anne

The most important thing to remember is to burn the calories. You must get your

bodyfat lower than 12% to reveal those ab muscles. Also a variety of exercises

done to failure. I've been training a young man for weight loss for several

years and finally we've reached a point where we can see his ab muscle. I have

him doing bent knee sit ups with a 10 pound medicine ball held overhead to

failure...that means about 40 repetitions on the first set.

We vary these with decline situps and hanging leg raises. As for my own ab

workout...I've done up to 1000 reps in 20 minutes...so my abs are strong.. They

weren't visible though till I got my body fat down. Have your bodyfat checked

and let me know what it is...we can go from there. Also if you could let me know

a sample day of calories ( types of food etc) and what you are doing currently

to work your abs.

Great work ..keep it up

The new issue of Runner's World include the ab exercises that the

elite runners use to have a strong core. I always had the stereotype

of the typical runner with no upper body strength, but these guys have

eye-popping abs and some nice upper body muscles. Of course, they

probably have about 2% body fat!

I'd like to try the ab workout, but it looks like it might take

awhile. I think I'll give it a try and will report back to here how I

feel the next day. The exercises look pretty challenging, many unlike

anything I have ever seen done.

I've just been doing crunches on a medicine ball for far too long.

It's time to try something new.

Andy,

We have something new at our gym that I love…I think you and Hugh need it

for your home gym. You can’t believe the core exercises you can do with

this…very difficult and challenging. Here’s a link:

http://www.fitnessanywhere.com/ It was invented by a navy seal. I love

this thing. Check out the exercise videos on the website!

Cool device! Two of the exercises they are showing are the same ones

that the RW article had but without using the TRX.

Definitely something that could be useful. A strong core is important

especially for runners.
