Guest guest
Further to the recent comfrey thread, I found the official info from NIMH of 1993 following a directive from MAFF. (If anyone has more recent updates then let us all know.) "To sum up then, as a practitioner you may use comfrey root and leaf externally (properly labelled). Please do not use comfrey root, or any capsules or tablets containing comfrey (any part of the plant). You can continue to use the leaf as a tea or tincture - the dosage is unrestricted by the Government - but bear in mind our previous recommendation (maximum dose of Symphytum leaf 1:5 tincture is 100ml per week, to be taken for no more than eight weeks)". The attached MAFF document sums up by saying:"Manufacturers have been asked to withdraw tablets and capsules containing comfrey. Do not consume them.Don't eat comfrey leaves as a vegetableDon't make teas from comfrey root or eat it directly." Neither document specifies which species of comfrey they are referring to but the assumption is symph. officinalis of course. Helen
