Hi Kate

Have you tried a Cranial Osteopath? I find it often helps in

combination with herbs for such cases

Although I rarely post in here, I read everything and

could really use some advice/wisdom from those more

experienced than me!

It is for my own baby which may cloud my view (that and

the lack of sleep) but generally I am inexperienced in

treating babies/children.

My son is 10 weeks old and has severe wind and reflux. He

was admitted to A & E at 4 weeks as he had episodes of

choking, they prescribed ranitidine and domperidone, which

I didnt give to him.

He vomits a lot after almost every feed - was every one

but improving, and in between has a lot of wind, which

tends to be difficult to 'get out.' He still has

occasional choking episodes which are bloody scary.

I am drinking fennel tea and some chamomile, fully breast

feeding, and giving him a probiotic. He is gaining weight

and generally content but cries a lot as is obviously in

pain. Much worse when lying down, hence I spend most of

the time walking him around - he is unhappy unless being

held and sleeps poorly at night. I gave up wheat and

dairy, dairy has more of an impact. I keep him upright

after feeding and have the moses basket propped up. Give

him gripe water which temporarily helps with the wind.

Sorry for the long post but feeling I can't see the wood

for the trees , and would really appreciate any ideas?

Many thanks,

Kate.

There are quite a lot of other foods that can increase wind via the

milk. Can't think of the list offhand, but would guess brassicas,

maybe onions, IIRC there is a good list in Anne Macintyre's Mother and

Baby herbal (which I think is a must have). Is he latching on

properly? I expect you've checked this, but it is a common source of

wind.

Hi Kate I can second ’s idea, we saw a Cranial Osteopath for my daughter (who is now just over 2) and my son (7months) for both posseting and as a general check up. For both children, this worked fantastically and had some very interesting and intriguing responses from both of them, coupled with what you are also doing, herb wise. One of the things that came out for my daughter was that she needed to go through the birth process again, she herself went through the motions and the C-osteo ‘caught’ her as she was caught actually being born, and as a result she became so much more settled and content. It was a truly humbling and emotional experience. Hi Kate,I've treated quite a few babies for reflux, as well as having 3 babies of my own who had it - the first much more severely than the other two, as I didn't know how to handle it in the beginning but learned a lot which benefited the other two.As I'm sure you already know, there is usually incompetence of the oesophageal sphincter which allows milk and acid to pass upward and out of the stomach. There is then a compensatory tightening of lots of the abdominal muscles in order to try to keep the contents in the stomach. This does seem to help a bit with the reflux (though far from being fully effective), but it also has the effect of trapping wind.Time and time again I have found that fennel, chamomile and other carminatives (including gripe water), either directly or via breastmilk may help to relieve the wind short term, but they over-relax the sphincter and tend to make the reflux much worse. What does seem to help a bit is homeopathic Chamomilla (sold as teetha or teething granules). I guess it's the like treating like principle. I know many parents have had positive experiences with cranial osteopathy for reflux, and I know it's brilliant for colic, but it can make things worse in cases of reflux if they over-relax the abdominal muscles, and unfortunately this was my experience. I t might be worth getting a recommendation from another parent for a cranial osteopath who has specifically and successfully treated severe reflux if you are going to try this.In my case, as well as other cases I have treated, dietary factors, especially eliminating gluten and dairy are essential, as I know you have already discovered. It is also important to eliminate anything that you feel you do not digest easily yourself. In terms of herbs, I use the usual ones you would consider in adult reflux - about 1 ml each of Glycyrrhiza FE and Althea (rad) to protect the mucosa, about 2 mL filipendula as an antacid and anti-inflammatory (and much better than giving orthodox antacids to small baby in my opinion), and about 10drops of acorus to help with enzyme production and to tone the sphincter, in about 3 mL of vegetable glycerine. I usually give a this directly to the baby, about 10 drops of the mix 3 times a day (and have never had a problem with doing this). It is also an option to take it yourself (but at an appropriate adult dose) so it can act through the breast milk, but I usually give it direct to the baby. However, I do sometimes recommend that the mother takes some bitter herbs, which would be more difficult to give direct to the baby, but which have the effect of improving the digestion of the breastmilk.A baby sling which keeps the baby completely upright, such as the baby wrap, can also be very helpful. It allows you to get on with things without having to lie baby down, and the movement really helps to get them off to sleep. My apologies also for the long post, but I hope you find something helpful here, and that things improve for you and your little one. I know from personal experience that it is such a difficult, distressing and exhausting condition for the parent as much as the baby.Best wishes,ÁineMarie

I would take him to see a chiropractor who works with babies. I do so sympatise - had I known about the probiotic, the wheat and the chiropractor we all would have had a lot more sleep. Some babies need a sternal, adjustment and that often corrects these sxSent from my iPad

Hi Kate,Please try a cranial chiropractor. I work from a clinic where the principal is a cranial worker and she does amazing work with babies with just such problems. Two of my grandchildren have really benefited from it. Good luck. To: "ukherbal-list " <ukherbal-list > Sent: Saturday, 25 August 2012, 22:06 Subject: Re: Refux/wind in baby.

Hello,

Thanks so much to everyone for your responses, really helpful, makes such a

difference having new ideas to try.

He has seen a Chiropractor, but she specialised in spinal alignment so will look

for a Cranial specialist - any recommendations in the S London/Surrey area?

Thanks again,

Kate
