Guest guest
Hi Liz.Not sure about " repairs " but partial meniscectomies are fairly common with arthroscopy. I'm sure our surgeons will comment...Amie hi, I just had a conversation with a local surgeon about arthroscopic meniscal repairs for dogs. He does not have the capability yet. Someone in CA posted a while back, stating that they have a surgeon who does arthroscopy on stifles. The surgeon said that this is one of the hot topics. Anyone have more info on this? Thanks! Guest guest
Sorry for the delay on this one…….yes, arthroscopic partial menisectomies are very common now-a-days (for those scoping), however we are still working through the challenges of a good " arthroscopic meniscal repair technique " . Seems to be a challenge on the human side as well. Best, Sherman Sherman O. Guest guest
i am curious, for the surgeons out there....i have several cases arise, that appear to have a stable stifle, however there is definite meniscal tear. (by vet diagnosis) i am wondering, are surgeons doing just arthroscopic surgery only, or does meniscal tear mean that typically when you go into the joint space you find a partial tear as well? just curious Tania CCRP, Vt, CAAP, CMT
Guest guest
Tania, I am not clear on what you are asking? It is very rare for a stable stifle to have a meniscal tear unless it is a very chronic stifle and the ACL and meniscus have been damaged for awhile. a large periarticular fibrotic joint can sometimes appear stable and if the meniscus is torn and shifted anterior and fibrosed is a forward position you would not know it unless you looked with a scope or mini-arthrotomy. What i have found after many years is that the only true way to tell if a meniscus is torn is by direct visualization. MRI can be helpful but even in people where it is the standard, they can be missed, case in point my daughter, DX as an ACL tear only but with scope had 2 MMC tears and 1 LMC tear. In dogs it is not common to have an MMC with out some degree of gross instability, enough to allow the cranial tibial thrust +/- tibial rotation necessary to tear the meniscus. Thanks and hope this is helpful, Mark Parchman, DVM, DACVS, CVA, CCRT Re: arthroscopic meniscal repair > i am curious, for the surgeons out there....i have several cases > arise, that appear to have a stable stifle, however there is > definite meniscal tear.
