Dear Nan, In past years, I didn't have an increase in bone density when I was on Fosamax, Evist and Actonel. Finally my Primary sent me to an endocrinologist and he placed me on Actonel and Evista. A year later I had a small increase in bone density. Please note that I always take 1000 mg of calcium with Vita. D each day for at least the past 7 years. I was also given a blood test as the endo Dr. stated that he found many women in So. FL have a vit. D deficiency. The test showed that I did also, and he placed me on 50,000 units of Vit. D. My next bone density test will be in the fall and hopefully, the results will reveal an larger increase in bone density. However, I'll be happy if it remains the same

and I don't lose anymore. Eileen-FL Raven wrote: HHhhmmmm funny when I asked my rheumatoid doc about it he kind of brushed me off. However the main concern at the time was my blood clotting and the blood tests I took. Becuase I like my primary care doctor I think I am going to take the email Joy sent about the Fosamax and Actonel and see what she thinks about it. I was to build bone and not lose anymore. I do all the wonderful things like eat Yogurt, veggies, fruits and exercise. I'd like to top it off with some whipping cream like Fosamax or even if there is something better out there. Not heard of it here, myself.Osteoporosis is calculated at a minimum percentage bone loss to be prescribed meds (in Oz). Fosamax (Risondrate – implicated in Jaw Bone Necrosis

after dental surgery – so is smoking..) and Alendrate (gave me diarrhoea), and Strontium are the only ones I know. I’ve had painful joints and spine for decades, which I understand is more to do with osteo-arthritis, was dx w/ degenerative bone disease (30y old) whatever that means – should that have been a warning for later osteoporosis – can’t get an answer to that one.. Seems to be one of those dx like “macular follicular inflammation†for rash causing skin redness...! And yes, you’re right, we do bounce back – eventually! Eileen,

This is wonderful news. I', saving your email to present the pertinent

info to my regular doctor. It is time sometone got serious about my

bone loss. I don't think I was tested for D deficiency either?

Thanks for your promising report.

Hi ,

I take Actonel (once a week for

spine and hip) and Evista (every day) for ostoprosis, and since the

endocrinologist found that I am low in Vit D, he also has me on 50,000

units every two weeks. In addition, I have to take 1,000 units of

Calcium plus Vit D each day.

In the fall, I'm due for another

Bone Density test and hope to see major improvment from all these

meds. It's time consuming and expensive.

Hi Joy,

So glad to here

you are bouncing back. Us energizer turtles must stick together. Of

course as slow as we are we can't lose one another even bouncing around

I am supposed to

take Boniva for my Osteopenia (borderline -porosis). I forget as it is

a once a month pill. Instructions are to take it first thing in the

morning with water, do not lay back down, drink or eat anything for a

hour afterward. I picked up Calcium 600 Mg. + D & Minerals to take

twice a day with food. Now if I weren't a procrastinator I would take

the Boniva too. I need to be disciplined. I don't know of any other

meds to take for osteoporosis but know there is a weekly pill one can

take too. I don't know the name.

I have

degenerative bones in my neck which also means osteoarthritis. My neck

goes into spasms at times and I can barely turn my head left or right.

I use a heating pad and Tylenol. My mother had this same problem. It

comes and goes. Although even when it went I can't turn my head

completely or easily.

You were very

young for this degenerative bone disease. Didn't they put you on

something to halt the progression? Or advise you what to do? Here is a

good site about this:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000423.htm

As far as the MAC

test they are doing on my sputum my doctor doesn't even know why they

are doing it as my sputum came back normal? MAC doesn't appear to be

uncommon in peeps with bronchiectasis according to any bronchi web site

I visit. Quite a number of the members came down with it. It doesn't

appear I have it as I am feeling fine.

Hugs,

Nan
