Guest guest
Hi all, I also have in the past noted " Oh, this is the second person with complaint X this week, how strange! " and naturally we may wonder, is this 'planned', is it 'intended'? However, if you think about it, you will first of all find that while you do take note when you get clusters of certain patients, you won't take note when you don't - though both presentations are in fact equally likely to happen. (The same applies when somebody rings us just when we are thinking of them and we put it down to telepathy - happily ignoring all those times we thought of them and they didn't ring...). Secondly, it is useful to remember that when we try to interpret events in a way that implies an underlying intention, rather than allow for a mundane cause, we in fact do so because evolution has programmed us in that way. When we hear a sudden noise, it is (or at least was) much better for our survival if we presumed there is 'something' out to get us (and run!) than to think " Ah no, it's just the breeze in the trees " and then get eaten. Better to run and then find out there was nothing there in the first place... Thirdly, we have to consider what we actually mean when we say, " those patients come to me (or stay away) because/when it is good for my learning/development/health " . It implies that somehow everything (people & events) is arranged so as to purposefully facilitate _my_ life. How about the other people? If we suggest that for them it works the same way (i.e. everything happens to advance _their_ life/learning), then networking the lives of 6 billion humans (don't know whether other animals would be included) in a meaningful way would require some serious planning and organising... With some 2 billion people without clean water, this clearly isn't happening and the question arises: does this mysterious agency only work for some? And why? It raises serious ethical questions, and while as individuals we are clearly free to believe whatever we like, in our role as health care providers we may have to be a bit more critical.
