Following is the official Call for Abstracts. For those of you unfamiliar with this meeting, it is a wonderful week of brief abstract presentations with great Q & A sessions. All programming takes place from 7-9AM, then from 4-6PM, allowing attendees to spend the middle of the day enjoying the slopes. The 2013 meeting will take place March 9-16, 2013 at Canyons Resort near Park City, Utah.I hope that those of you with innovative processes related to orthopedics and rehabilitation will consider submitting an abstract for this meeting. If you have any questions, please contact me.Jan CALL FOR PAPERS/ABSTRACT FORMATPLEASE NOTE SEVERAL CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS YEARS 40th ANNUAL MEETING VETERINARY ORTHOPEDIC SOCIETY Canyons Resort, Park City, Utah March 9-16, 2013 We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species, to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance or relevance to themes of the 2013 meeting including clinical projects relating to OSTEOARTHRITIS AND REHABILITATION. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case (series) reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts and incorporated into the annual meeting. Presentations will be limited to 10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Notes from the Program Chair: 1. There will only be one call for papers that requires a final, complete abstract be submitted by November 1st 2012. NO subsequent changes to the abstract will be allowed. Please note that ONLY submissions that include BOTH the long and short versions of the abstract, PROPERLY FORMATTED, will be considered. Abstracts will be scored blinded based on the significance of the findings, originality, scientific quality and general interest. Case reports will be reviewed based on novelty, practical interest, and completeness. 1. The Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial RESIDENT Research Award sponsored by the VOS was established to recognize outstanding abstracts submitted to the scientific program by residents. At least three awards will be conferred each year to provide funds (up to $1,500) to enable residents to attend and present their abstract at the annual meeting. To be eligible the applicant must be in a resident training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program are eligible. The submission must reflect work conducted during the residency program. Resident status will be verified. PLEASE READ COMPLETELY BEFORE PREPARING AND SUBMITTING ABSTRACTS (An example of the submission process will be posted online at www.vosdvm.org) 1. Abstract deadline: November 1, 2012. Abstracts with complete data and statistical analysis, if applicable, must be received by this date. Abstracts must be submitted electronically via the online submission system by the link on the VOS website (www.vosdvm.org) starting August 1st. 2. Submission requires the following information· Category – Clinical/Basic science, or Case Report/seriesClinical Research is patient oriented research. This includes using clinical patients or their tissues to study mechanisms of disease, interventions, complications, or epidemiological research.Basic Science research is research into the mechanisms or treatment of disease using models (i.e. disease induction, biomechanical testing, etc)Case Report is a single case or short series of cases where the epidemiology, disease mechanism, or novel treatment is described along with outcome.· Species – Large animal, small animal, or exotic· Presentation preference (podium, poster, either) All those submitting for podium preference will also be considered for poster, but preference will be given to the presentation. Those who choose poster will not be considered for podium presentation.· Author affiliation and contact information.· Acknowledgement of any conflicts of interest· Acknowledgement section for funding source or conflicts of interest. · Two abstracts – a long abstract for the review process and a short abstract for publication.· Confirmation indicating materials were received, readable, and correctly formatted received by submitter. You should receive a confirmatory email message within 24 hours of submission. 1. LONG abstract: The abstract length is limited to 800 words. Single space between paragraphs, using Times New Roman or Arial 12 pt font. Do NOT include authors’ names or affiliations in this abstract to maintain anonymity during the review process. VOS is not responsible if affiliations are included in this abstract. Pictures, tables, and figures are allowed. 2. SHORT abstract: This abstract will be used for publication in VCOT and the Conference Proceedings and should contain the authors’ names and affiliations and is limited to 250 words in Arial or Times-New Roman 12 pt formatting. The following headings are required for submission of Basic or clinical abstracts. Headings are not required for case reports but proprietary or conflict of interest statement is still required. TITLE: Should accurately reflect what was done. The title should be capitalized. INTRODUCTION: Background on general topic or previous work; include statement of purpose of the study and hypothesis. This should convey the need, significance/impact of the work. MATERIALS & METHODS: Briefly describe the methodology of research or technique used in this study. Methods should be appropriate to answer the hypothesis or problem that generated the work. RESULTS: Data should be presented in sufficient detail to support the conclusions. It is not acceptable to generalize or state, "results will be discussed". DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Include an interpretation of the results. Do not simply restate the results. Was the hypothesis/problem answered? Were limitations or additional problems identified? How can the information derived from this study, or technique, best be applied to further research or clinical situation? Provide relevance and/or innovation to the current body of knowledge. REFERENCES: A limited number of references are allowed, if necessary in the long abstract. ACKNOWLEDGMENT: Disclose any proprietary interest and identify financial support, either by direct funding (extramural or intramural) or materials. This MUST be provided in both the short and long abstracts for the abstracts to be considered complete. If there is no funding, you must still make a statement like “There was no proprietary interest or funding provided for this project” Podium presentations at the Conference: PowerPoint (single screen) will be the only podium presentation medium guaranteed at the Conference. If any other audiovisual aid is required, please inform the program chair(s) at least 30 days in advance. ALL presentations will use the VOS computer designated for this purpose. ALL presentation files MUST be loaded on the designated computer at least one session prior to scheduled presentations. Failure to do so will result in elimination of the presentation from the Conference. ALL presentations will be limited to a maximum of 10 minutes. Moderators will strictly enforce the 10-minute time limit. Poster presentations at the Conference: Posters must fit within the 4’ (height) x 4’ (width) area provided at the Conference. Poster presenters are responsible for bringing materials (push pins, tape, etc.) required for mounting the posters for display. The posters should be posted for display on Sunday and removed at the end of the Poster Session on Wednesday evening.
