Guest guest
Dear , With warfarin pts , I tell most of them that they should arrange their warfarin intake around the herbs , and not the other way around , ie , if they want to go down that road . I also tell them that there is a herbal alternative . Maureen did her MSc on this topic and Mellilot . My advice is to say to the pt that he tells his doctor that he wants to use herbs and that he wants him to adjust the warfarin dosage to achieve the desired INR . Emmett Walsh patient on warfarin I may have mentioned this patient to the group before - he is on numerous drugs, including warfarin, after suffering a stroke. He is very keen to have herbal medicine and reduce the drug dosage, although his G.P. says he will have to stay on warfarin. He is in his early 60s but has been 'studying herbs' since he was 20! At the moment I have him on a mixture of Avena FE, Xanthoxylum, and Urtica, but he would like to have both Crataegus and Leonorus in his medicine and I am not sure of the compatibility here with warfarin. He knows that he cannot have Ginkgo or garlic, but is wondering about fish oils. Any suggestions please? Many thanks.
Guest guest
I take the same approach as Emmet but usually find that the herbs have less affect on the warfarin levels/INR than we have been led to believe. I advise frequent monitoring initially until things have stabilized. Guest guest
Hi Carolyn I have a few of the small emr bugs left. They won’t stop the computer from getting hot but they will stop the buildup of the electrical field around it. They are adhesive and the glue is very strong so they are not repositionable. They will last a lifetime, but obviously if you change your computer you have to think about how you restick it or if you want to replace it. Cost: $35 Colours in stock are: White Pale pink American flag. Guest guest
Hi I have found a step by step approach useful here, small changes and check INR. Also i communicate with the doctor. Crataegus and leonurus is no problem along side warfarin. With one patient i even have them on Ginkgo, introduced slowly and in discussion with the doctor to monitor INR: actually didnt seem to make much difference. Would love to see Maureen advice on Melilot and warfarin. Guest guest
I have a patient aged 63 who had a stroke 2 years ago affecting his right side following atheroma in one of the arteries in his neck. He has had high blood pressure all his life, and previously was suffering from heart failure with enlarged left ventricle, & raised cholesterol levels. He is on a number of drugs, including warfarin, but has been interested in herbs all his life, and would rather take herbal anticoagulants than warfarin. His diet is not good, he has little appetite but likes meat, tends not to eat much fruit or veg but has various vitamin and mineral supplements, and he also smokes rollups although he has cut down. He also suffers from anxiety and depression, which have been worse since the stroke, and is currently experiencing neuralgic pain in the side of his face radiating down his right arm into his hand. He does have some movement in his right side, but movement can be painful, and circulation generally is not good. He already takes Crataegus tablets, and occasionally has nettle tea. I am having to be very careful about what herbs I give him as he is still on the warfarin, and am currently giving him a combination of Gentian, Borago, Urtica, Avena, and Capsicum. However, he has asked if I could find out about how coumarins work, and also fish oils. He is wanting to come off the warfarin and have herbs instead, and wondered whether this might be possible. Obviously, his G.P. would not be happy, but, as he said, it's his life. I'd appreciate any advice anyone could give me! Many thanks.
