Guest guest
Look here for info on your state. http://www.realmilk.com/happening.html#ny It appears that sales on farm are legal only if you are licensed and inspected by the state and only for fluid milk. I was informed today by a freind that selling cow shares in NY state is illegal. I also sell homemade butter in a small farm stand on my property and was told that also is illegal. Could anyone out there tell me if this is true or am I okay to market my products this way? I live in Otsego county, NY. Thank to anyone out there that can help me in this matter. Guest guest
Hello ! Thank you for your response , but what about cow shares? Do you know if it is legal to sell those in NY? Thank you again for your help...although my dreams seem to be getting harder to achieve. -- RE: Cow Shares in NY state Look here for info on your state. http://www.realmilk.com/happening.html#ny It appears that sales on farm are legal only if you are licensed and inspected by the state and only for fluid milk. Guest guest
You can become certified to sell raw milk only , no products from your farm with only on farm pickup. You can become certified to sell raw milk cheese, pasteurized dairy products however you have to have an inspected an approved facility with appropriate equipment. "back yard" Dairy is illegal in NY of course they have to find you to shut you down........................... It is not that intense to have a small raw milk cheese facility if you are familiar with dairy facilities. We have an extremely simple setup and make and sell raw milk cheese. We milk 40 goats and cannot keep up. BUT it is extremely hard work. We work for ourselves and nobody in our family works a 40 hr week! Guest guest
I believe as the previous poster said that only inspected farms may sell milk. This probably means no shares. It didn’t say anything on Real Milk about shares. I am in Tennessee and lucky that shares are legal. Now if I can just get the kids grown and bred I will have enough goat milk to share. Guest guest
That is so cool! Happy for you ! Where do you live in TN? I used to live just south of Murfreesboro, in Bradyville. I really miss it there, but have found Happiness here in Upstate NY....But these Laws are totally ridiculous! -- RE: Cow Shares in NY state Look here for info on your state. http://www.realmilk.com/happening.html#ny It appears that sales on farm are legal only if you are licensed and inspected by the state and only for fluid milk. Guest guest
We live in Sunbright. It is west from Knoxville about 1 & 1/2 hours drive. It is really nice here except for the ticks. Guest guest
The whole purpose of the cow share is based on private property - if you own the cow (or part of it) you are allowed use/drink the milk for your own purpose. The share owner is not buying milk, only taking their share of the milk, manure and eventual beef that they own part of. Perhaps some of the co-owners are paying one co-owner to care for the cow, still legal. If you co-owned a horse or a house with a non-related person would you not also have the right to ride the horse and use the house ? Same is being applied to the cow. The big dairy influenced "public health protectors" don't like the idea. Check out the many raw milk sites if they have any info on state rulings that would apply. --Mike You can become certified to sell raw milk only , no products from your farm with only on farm pickup.
