Guest guest
Hi Evan's syndrome is IMHA (immune-mediated hemolytic anemia) together with ITP (immune-mediated thrombocytopenia). Until the dog is stable in its red cell and platelet count, I would hold off on rehab. Once the dog is stable (get ok from rDVM first), you can resume rehab appropriate for the dog's level of conditioning. Just be careful to avoid any abrasions or micro-injuries as the dog will be more susceptible to small bleeds as compared to healthy dogs. Also, do not prescribe any new medications or supplements without speaking with the rDVM first, as some medications can trigger a relapse.Would also be a good idea to request updates on PCV and platelet counts periodically, so you can be sure the dog can continue with your rehab protocol. Hope that helps.Best,-- Leilani Alvarez, DVM, CVA, CCRT, CVCHMRehabilitation and Fitness ServiceThe Animal Medical Center 510 E. 62nd StreetNew York, NY 10065 Hello - a friend of mine recently learned that her 7 year old Golden Retriever has been diagnosed with Syndrome. She is currently on the drug protocol and is looking ahead to her rehab. This dog is a champion agility dog and was quite active. The owner understands that this dogs competition days are over but would like to eventually bring her to me for rehab. I have talked with her about limiting her activity and she is not of the mindset to push her dog or do anything that is unsafe for the dog, so no worries there. Has anyone treated a dog in rehab with Syndrome? If so, any suggestions? I envision a protocol of mostly swimming or slow UWTM. Thoughts? Thanks so much!
