I don't have an answer to your swim mileage question but as a former Ironman triathlete and current marathoner I can say that when athletes are saying that running easier work than swimming, they are comparing exact distances (i.e. it's a heck of a lot easier to run 2.4 miles than it is to swim it). There is no way that I'd consider a 5 minute swim a 5 mile workout for man or beast. Even from a cardio point of view. Apples to oranges.Liz Devitt, DVM, CCRP

I couldn't agree with Liz more. There is no comparison when it comes to even

distances. Even moreso, I think it is quite difficult if not impossible to

extrapolate energy expenditure based on human studies. Comparing apples to

oranges is an understatement. Not only are we comparing the efficiency of using

very different biomechanics regarding swimming when comparing a human and a dog

we are not even dealing with muscle fiber types that are identical.
