Guest guest
Absolutely. Three months is not a problem. The problem here would be the warm weather. If its warm where you are, be sure they know to keep an eye on it and maybe spray it with something like wound-kote to help keep flies off. Guest guest
We just banded 5 Angus bull calves just shy of 6 months old and it wasn't a problem. They weighed from 525 to 600# each (we weighed them after banding). damon Banding a bull calf We have a 3 month old bull calf that someone wants to buy but I am not sure if we can still band him or not at that age. we have never done it that late. Guest guest
Be sure to give him a tetanus shot. I lost a steer to tetanus from banding. As said you will need to keep the flies off of it. Guest guest
Jackie Don't know what part of the country you're in. But heat and flies can bring problems this time of year with banding. Have you thought of just having him CUT ? ? I had a late calf cut, a few years ago (due to summer, and intense fly population- it just made more sense at the time). Think our vet charges $20 to cut. Or find a local cattleman to help if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. It's a quick process - Over and done with ! Easier on the calf. . .not enduring days of discomfort with that band. Guest guest
I tend to band. I had one cut one summer by an experienced stockman, and he bled out overnight and was dead in the morning. I know thats unusual, but it made me shy of that method. If I was worried about flies this time of year, I'd just wait another 15-20 days. Its gonna be a lot cooler soon. My bull calves that I band never act uncomfortable after the first 12 hours. Guest guest
Band them. Sneak up behind them when they are eating and slip it on. Our oldest calf was born in March and the youngest is about 6 weeks old. We haven’t banded them yet. My DIL was an experienced cattlemen.- 45 yrs- he always banded. If for some reason we had to cut a bull he ALWAYS had the vet do it. Better to pay someone who knows what they are doing than to possibly lose the calf. Banding is much easier on the calf.Good luck.Subject: Banding a bull calfTo: RawDairy Date: Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 2:59 PM We have a 3 month old bull calf that someone wants to buy but I am not sure if we can still band him or not at that age. we have never done it that late. Guest guest
We have been using the California bander on our animals to large for the little green bands. Has worked great on older rams, goats and bull calves. They have a video and yes I recommend the practice on the socks first. Of course I try to band in winter but it doesn't always work out that way. website for bander http://www.inosol.com/thecaliforniabander.html > > We have a 3 month old bull calf that someone wants to buy but I am not sure if we can still band him or not at that age. we have never done it that late.
