Guest guest
I have only used the GL (in my hands the halti does not work well) and I love it, but i know of a good positive trainer who prefers the Canny collar to it. I also use the Easy Walk harness made by premier, it works well on average pullers who are not dog aggressive, has much better acceptance by both owner and dog, and in my opinion is safe for most dogs with neck issues. I can't walk my terrier without it. Zink is not a fan of it but I have to disagree with her on that. pam mueller I have used gentle leaders and haltis, but am interested in 2 collars, the k9 bridle and the canny collar. Has anyone used these and like them? I want something easy for my clients to use when walking dogs without torquing their necks, I hope my spelling is correct. Mona L. Guest guest
The GL is intended to be used a a training TOOL. It is not intended to be used on general walks, etc. (yes, that is what they are marketed for NOW, but if you learn the history you will find it to be much to the contrary - OMG, I hate marketing). If a dog has much slack at all in the leash, and quickly moves forward, a great deal of torque is placed on the dogs neck, not to mention facial muscle pain. As a trainer of dogs w/severe aggression problems & a CVT, I RARELY recommend using a GL. IF I do use anything like that, I MUST know that my client understands learning theory and that this is ONLY A TOOL (which means the goal is to not be using it in 6 months), I recommend a Snoot Loop, and I make sure that I am the one that fits it to the dog. The owner purchases it, brings it to me, and I require 10 PRE-PAID sessions w/it prior to allowing them to purchase it from me and having me fit it to the dog. The dog MUST be able to pass my "tests" while wearing the SL before the owner actually owns the SL (a large deposit is required).I use a Snoot Loop on my own aggressive dog in really intense situations (honestly, she is so re-habed now that she doesn't really need it, but the more safe I feel, the more safe she feels). No pull harnesses that I have seen do NOT allow natural striding movement. Honestly, the fact is that most people do not walk/jog/run fast enough for their dogs. For exercise, I recommend the Springer and the purchase of a bike, w/the dog on a Comfort Flex Harness so that the dog can move naturally, and the owner can keep up. OR and better, long, off leash walks in the woods (long valks in the voods, as Turid Rugas would say). I realize that these days that is hard to find. I know that my property is open to all of my students anytime they want to use it. And YES, I break the rules in state and national parks. My dogs are well trained, and I risk it. For dogs that are in rehab (incl. my own w/both of her 2 TPLOs, and another w/"idiopathic shoulder pain" - it so sucks to live in OKC area - no good dx surgeons/rehab vets; I still use the CF harness, tossing treats directly in front of the dog to maintain the pace required. Garrett gave many of her students (incl. me) a great exercise. Start w/tossing a treat into a laundry basket (w/both hands - this is not ONLY a training exercise - always deliver the treat w/the hand closest to the dog - but it also keeps the dog looking forward which is much easier on the neck). Go from a laundry basket to being able to hit a paper plate (do all of the human training w/o the dog). Placement of reinforcement is KEY!!!!!!! Once we could do that we were allowed to toss treats.Maybe it is because I work a great deal w/agility folks, but it sinks in, and works. They are agility people that want nothing more than for their dogs to do what they love again ASAP; but not too soon...they understand that returning to the sport too soon is not good for their dogs. I have no issue w/GL (although I prefer the Snoot Loop), but it takes more that a 10 minutes session at the vet's office for people to learn how to use them, why they are using them, and the dangers of using them if they screw it up. Guest guest
My own dog is a “puller”. The gentle leader didn’t work but the canny collar worked great and the line of pull is centered. After about a month we went back to a surfeit harness.Pavlakos, CCRP From: VetRehab [mailto:VetRehab ] On Behalf Of DrFastTalk@...Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2012 3:24 PMTo: VetRehab Subject: head halters I have used gentle leaders and haltis, but am interested in 2 collars, the k9 bridle and the canny collar.
