Here's an interesting forward from Ellen on LC-D list ...V.

I've had this dx for 5 years now, but I grew up in a family with a

lot of diabetes, and a doctor father who specialized in diabetes and

heart disease (who passed away in 1971) who educated me thoroughly

and who lived a low-carb lifestyle his whole adult life.

I know it seems like we're all doing something sooo radical, sooo

unusual, and you still have to defend it to the younger doctors, but

I think it will help you to know that the traditional way of treating

type 2 diabetes was to eat a low-carb diet. Up until the 1970's, that

was the only way to treat it until you needed insulin, and many

people never reached that point. Low carb can be very effective in

the long term. And a liveable way of eating, (although we can count

our losses rather than our blessings).

So what changed? Well, the pharmaceutical companies invented some

medicines that could squeeze a bit more insulin out of our sputtering

cells, and announced that we could eat the carbs now. More medicines

followed, each 'solving' another piece of the diabetes problem,

allowing a more 'normal' life, meaning, more carb.

Simultaneously, the US slipped into an obsession with low-fat eating.

This started as a short-cut for weight loss: 9 calories per gram of

food eliminated, vs. 4 for carb and protein. And besides, wouldn't

you think that less fat eaten means less fat put on? And with that

simple piece of simpleminded but inaccurate 'logic', everyone has

been treated to a guilt-ridden, impossibly low fat, high-carb,

national diet.

In fact, the rate of diabetes has sharply risen throughout the

country. Can anyone spell 'pyramid diet'?

The ADA managed to combine these two factors into what has proved to

be a prescription for many disasters: in the past 20 years, the rate

of diabetic complications has sharply risen as people paid the ADA

for books and lessons in eating their sickening diet. Of course, all

these health problems are patients with 'failure to comply' on their

charts, right?

There aren't a lot of doctors who do an adequate job, thank goodness,

since they are particularly well-meaning prey to the mis-education

spread by the pharma/AMA gangs, and often do more mis-leading than

leading. Diabetes control requires self-care and lots of education,

something we do here real well. And that's made lots of us more

alert, more alive, and more healthy people. It's a challenge, but

challenges are good for us. It requires learning, but research is

proving that as long as you keep learning, you can keep your smarts.

So it's a pain, but it's also a (mixed) blessing.

Hi, Teri, glad you're here... was feeling deserted. well, I know...summer's

almost over and we've only had a few days of +80 weather...hardly seemed like

summer. Took a hike in the Columbia Gorge this afternoon, half hour from

town, wonderful hike one mile off highway to fantastic waterfall through

beautiful greenery. How lucky I am to live here! How's your headache?

Feeling better? V.

Nope! You aren't disconnected. Just nothing going on today. Very quiet

again.
