I just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I am so glad to finally find

some information about misophonia. For over 30 years I have felt crazy and

intolerant. I had no idea that other people were suffering from this too.

I've often tried to explain the feelings I get when (for instance) I hear the

muffled bass sound from my neighbor's house. My family barely hears it but for

me it feels like the noise permeates my core and it consumes me.

I also have issues with breathing, chewing & snoring noises. The anxiety of

traveling with my family (and being trapped in a hotel room with no relief) was

enough to ruin my vacations. There are only a few " trigger " people who's

breathing botherms me but of course they are those that are the closest to me.

Thanks to the information from this group I am finally seeking medical

treatment. I have an appointment with my neurologist to discuss NFB and am

trying to find the right audiologist in my area.

Welcome Kirsten! It's always nice to find out you're not crazy, eh? You're

super not crazy b/c most of the people here have the biggest issues with chewing

sounds and mouth sounds..it seems to be the most common trigger.

Just wanted to say hey :) If you don't mind, you should let us know if the

neurologist appointment eventuates into anything!

You and me both; when I developed this in high school it was bad, and quickly

spread like a virus from the one sound that was bothering the hell out of me, to

just about every other sound I'd hear. I'd cry in class with my head in my

arms, give people evil looks, and clawed at my face with my fingernails

occasionally when I went off the deep end. My school counselor and principle

decided I should go to a depression clinic, which I unfortunately agreed to.

According to some law, even though I could have decided not to go, I was still

required to be handcuffed and escourted to the clinic in a squad car, even

though the only thing I'd done wrong was literally look at people the wrong way

(that and the scratches on my face). After I had agreed to it, I was also

required to be locked up in the place for a minimum of 1 week, and all my

triggers ended up being there, along with a few truly insane people (what wasn't

there was my original clothes that I had to check in at the front desk, as I

might strangle myself with them or hide something in them to slit my wrists

with, etc.). Until I had found out about misophonia, I honestly believed that I

was half-insane. Oh, and my father thought(still does a little) that I was

possesed, and my brother thought I wanted everyone and me to feel sorry for

myself.

Windows are usually the weak link; fix those up, and it should lessen the

vibration at least. Tell me whatever you can about The construction details of

your walls and windows, and I can offer you some advide, as I've researched

soundproofing alot.

Awesome. Keep us informed as to your progress, whether for better or worse :)

Jarred, I'm sorry I was cranky about NFB yesterday. I was overly sensitive to the questioning of Dr. J yesterday, which had to do with other conflicts in the misophonia world, not with any bona fide members of this group, like you. I regret my post to you yesterday, I know you meant no offense to Dr. J.I'd just like to say that your collection of info about and research into soundproofing is impressive. I will be saving it to refer to should I ever have the chance to try this route. I don't know if you are a member of misophonia.info or not?. But if you have any inclination to repost parts of soundproofing thread over at 's site, I'm sure it would be helpful to many who are looking into soundproofing. Unfortunately, it's so hard to find information at this listserve. At

the forum it would be easily found and much appreciated I am sure. To: Soundsensitivity Sent: Friday, March 9, 2012 12:03 AM Subject: Re: Hello, I am new to this group

You took the words right out of my mouth! Please everyone who participated in that sound proofing thread if you could just cut and paste it all onto the Misophonia.info site that would be fantastic. It's the only way to organize all this stuff for future easy access. Once the 20/20 wave of members hit it'll be impossible to find anything here because people don't like to search discussion groups, they like to ask questions. We will see the same questions ver and over as each person joins. If we can have a lot of our discussions cut and pasted over there then we can be the welcome wHon here but point them to the site for answers without repeating everything for months on end. It really is the only way I see it working. I've put some of my thoughts over there, would be great to see a lot more!:-)HeidiSent from my iPhone

But remember all of you, NOTHING on this site is allowed to be pasted onto any

other site, unless it is YOURS.

Do not include pieces of writing by other people, either, when you post your own

items.

Hi Kirsten,

I'm new to the group also. Just wanted to say I totally sympathize with you

about the bass noise that no one else notices AND the noises made by those

closest to you! It is so hard for people who don't suffer from misphonia to

understand how noises can affect us so adversely. But now you have found people

who do understand!

Hi Kirsten! I'm new too. I completely agree with you about chewing, drinking,

breathing, and snoring. It's ridiculous. I am especially bothered when my

parents do these things. That's why I hat traveling with them (however I love to

travel). Being trapped on an airplane for an 8 hr flight when their sleeping,

eating, yawning, and smacking gum is painful. We fly coach usually, so it's

cramped as well. And to be cramped into the same hotel room... Painful! How did

you deal with 4s? I've only had it for 8 yrs.

Let's see..how have I coped with it.....ear plugs, listening to music on headphones, suffering through it, and avoidance. As far as traveling goes, at night I would end up in the hotel room bathroom with my headphones on, fan on and reading a book. Sometimes I would even sneak out to the car to get some sleep. I'm glad you mentioned yawning. When my husband yawns is drives me crazy and angers me, then I get mad at myself for being so bothered by it. I wasn't sure if that was part of misophonia or not.Kirsten

Yes, it is such a relief to know I'm not alone!

I am brand new to the group too (first day!) and you sound just like me. Did

you have any luck with the neurologist or audiologist?

My neurologist thinks it is jut hyperacusis stemming from my migraines so he's

starting out by treating my migraines with a preventative medicine. I think it

will take a few more follow ups for him to realize this is different but I'm

hopeful once he does he'll address it.

I'm glad you found the group. It's amazing how much it as helped me just

realizing that I am not crazy and alone in going though this. Somehow, knowing

that ths is an actual affliction makes it a little easier to deal with. I hope

it helps you as well.

What brought you to the group? What has your experience been?
