Actually, it has been said many times in this group that wearing earplugs is not recommended as it can actually make the misophonia worse....

Hello all,

I am new to the group. I've been reading up on all this, starting because my co-workers crunching chips and what not in their cubies is...well...you know. Also, I hear...crickets.

Tinnitus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus), or hearing phantom sounds, can be caused by wearing ear phones. Wearing ear phones is suggested from when you suffer from Misophonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia), meaning certain sounds drive you crazy (crunching). So, you wear ear phones for one and cause the other.

Sucks.

Thanks,

REALLY??? I didn't know that! I'm new to the group! They have really seemed to

help me. Maybe it depends on the individual?

It might be best to use earplugs selectively. Pick the times when you're most sensitive, use them, and then remove them when you're feeling safer. Earplugs are like friends; you like them a lot, but if you don't need them around all the time.

What others have said... is that it helps in the moment... but in the long run, it makes things MUCH worse. You become used to the muffled sounds and then after time, when you don't have earplugs in, all the sounds that normally bother you seem SO much louder and bother you 100 times more than if you had never used the earplugs to try to control the misophonia in the first place.

Something very odd is going on when earplugs make misophonia worse, as

opposed to just not helping. However, this might be a vital clue to

understanding what is going on in the ear. Even if people on this site do not

think they have Superior Semicircular Canal Syndrome, they should still read the

Wikipedia entry on SSCS which indicates what complex and misunderstood disorders

can result just from a minute hole in a bone separating ear from brain.

Autistic children with noise sensitivity often do what common sense would

indicate, ie put their hands over their ears, presumably as this decreases the

annoyance. However, situations where earpugs might not help include:

1. Where sounds are internally generated. eg, if a normal person hums and then

blocks off their ears, the sound increases due to the occlusion effect (less

sound escapes from the ear canals). In SSCS (above), people may hear their

eyeballs move or hear a tuning fork placed on their ankle. They also hear noises

like crickets.

2. Where there is preexisting tinnitus. Reducing background external sound

makes the tinnitus more prominent.

3. Earplugs may irritate the ear, so that after they are removed it might be in

a hypersensitive state.

4. Infants with middle ears full of fluid (glue ears) are hypersensitive to

bone-conducted sound (eg a tuning fork placed on the mastoid). They are likely

to form conditioned aversive responses to the now overloud normal maternal

noises and physical contact.
