I feel less pain at the time like Saturday night was painfree. Danced up a

storm and the next day felt crippled. My legs swelled up and I was in a great

deal of pain. I decided that it is not worth it because of one night to

party and then to pay the whole week after.

I agree with Kathy. But if you are interested in a link between diet and

autoimmune disease, spend some time on google. There is a fair amount of

research out there. Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) is an autoimmune

disease,

and is very underdiagnosed in the US (1% diagnosis out of the general

population vs close to 10% in Europe...given that many Americans are of

European

descent, it is fair to say there are a lot of people in this country with

celiac who don't know it). It can also produce lesions on the arms and legs

similar to psoriasis.

It's worth having your dr check on the next round of bloodwork for the

gliadin antibody, which can be an indicator of celiac (although it must be

confirmed through an intestinal biopsy, a procedure similar to colonoscopy but

they

go in at the other end).

Are you sure the pain wasn't from dancing? Perhaps you should try sipping

wine in the hot tub!

I know many of you should not drink alcohol at all because of meds. I am

not currently on any, so I think drinking in moderation is fine for me.

I have noticed even while not dancing that drinking definiitely inflames my

anything.

Yes, by sticking to the diet my symptoms have definitely improved but hasn't

totally banished the symptoms - that is where I am stuck. I am frustrated

because this diet is so hard and it hasn't completely " cured " my candida. I am

also taking probiotics and Candicin but obviously I am still missing something.

I definitely have seen a full turn around by adhering strictly to the

candida diet: not wheat, sugar, dairy, soy, pharmaceuticals, alcohol,

processed foods. However, I recently took a plunge from those heights

when I got cocky and started really cheating on my 7-year diet. I

went from being an overachiever, to going back to being plagued with

fatique, nausea, aches, pains, etc. I'm starting to come back around

with an unswerving dedication to the diet. I take the probiotics,

flax, a multi-vitamen and weekly vitamin B12 injections, though, all

under the guidance of a really good candida specialist. I got sick

back in January, and I'm still suffering symptoms. But I finally got

to Atlanta to see my specialist, and expect him to put me back on a

prescription antifungal to jumpstart my health a bit more. He did

give me a bunch of stuff for my initial visit to provoke my immune

system, such as nutricillin, but I can honestly say the diet was

working before he gave me anything. And I spent six weeks doubled

over in pain unable to work.

So I'm confused, pardon my ignorance, but if you have

been on a anti-cndida diet for 7 years, taking

pro-biotics and supps etc... why would you get so sick

if you cheated on your diet? Shouldn't (after 7 years)

your immune system be super duper healthy and not

allow candida to grow out of control considering there

is nothing there to kill the good bacteria? I mean

does having candida mean you are crippled for your

whole life? This doesn't make sense. If there is a

cure, and it's mostly diet related, and you are

completely cured from the condition and it's symptoms,

why would it come back after dietary changes? Are

people with candida just genetically weak or sick to

begin with? I see people around me (90%) who eat way

worse then I do, are overweight, caffiene, processed

foods and several medications, and they are perfectly

healthy feeling? I don't get it. Something tells me

that it has to be more then just candida making us

sick. I get overall nutrition should be good etc...,

but for food to make us as sick as we are and not the

erst of the population around us doesn't make sense.

Sorry so long, I'm just confused about this whole

thing. Sometimes Candida feels like a made up story

for people who have no diagnosis and are desperate for

someone to tell them what is wrong. Maybe we all have

something else in common that causes us to feel like

this??? Health anxiety? Stress and worry? I don't

know.

I've thought on this much and am frustrated as well, but I have a

few theories based on the evidence. I stayed on the diet about five

years very strict, and I nevery really ran amok. For example, my

doctor had to send a second blood panel for me recently becuase the

lab was suspicious when they couldn't compute my LDL (bad

cholesterol). I really don't have a significant amount, because I

really won't eat fast food. So the question remains. Why wasn't I

cured, if I did everything right for five years, and only

occasionally had chocolate cake, coffee and spagettie over the next

two years? First, I really suspect I have an immune system weakened

by, not necessarily candida, but whatever causes the inflammation.

All of my symptoms are inflammation related, and there are

inflammation diets out there now taht are so similar to the candida,

I have to ask if perhaps the root cause of the problems is't even

more sophisticated than our modern researchers have worked out for

public consumption. Back to why am I sick when I did everythign

right? I have a weak immune system, maybe weakened by my metal

toxicity (diagnosed this month), and considerable food allergies,

perhaps a bit of stress (Im very intense, and goal-oriented), or

maybe I was weakened by unknown exposure in the 70s to my grandad's

tendency to fog the house up with pesticides, my grandmother's

smoking, my swimming in 3-mile creek with its multicolor deposits

from local industry and Picasso-looking fish. For whatever reason, I

sometimes just relapse. Curiously, it just so happened to be when I

was getting cocky about eating like everyone else. So I suspect that

I need to stay on the diet longer and cheat minimally. There's also

the fact taht when Im sick I really do react to the foods forbidden

on teh diet, so there is no confusion there. Sugar causes my throat

to change in consistency and thicken til it's hard to swallow. Milk

causes allergic symptoms right away: mucus, sinus problems, post

nasal drip. Wheat doesn't cause a problem right away but several

hours later. These are all unmistakeable proof the diet is real. And

how can I be so sure one food is causing the symptoms when I eat so

many different things? I don't eat so many different things. I

usualy eat veggies, spelt, rice, fish. So it's very easy to tell

when I introduce wheat and have a bad reaction. I also have

questions bout yeast being the ultimate culprit, but I know the food

recommendations are dead on regardless.

=== I would imagine it was a very large " cheat " . Eating the odd piece of

cake or some bread now and then once you have your Candida under control,

should not be a problem. The person who got sick again probably just went

back to his/her old way of eating for month and alas, if you have a tendency

to Candida, you cannot ever go overboard for prolonged periods again with

the wrong foods, without getting sick.

=== But hey, that's really no different from someone who loses a lot of

weight and then goes back to the old eating habits and puts the weight back

on.

Shouldn't (after 7 years)

=== One of the problems with Candida is that it is always present in the

gut. Therefore, you don't eradicate it entirely, you just try to keep it

under control. If you start feeding it again with a lot of sugar and

starches, it is going to proliferate

Are people with candida just genetically weak or sick to

> begin with? I see people around me (90%) who eat way

==Um, about the people around you that are eating very unhealthy

diets..........granted, they may not get Candida, but they are eating their

way to an early grave in other ways - heart attacks, stroke, etc. You

can't keep eating junk and stay healthy. Sometimes I think that getting

Candida is a blessing in disguise in that we have been given a wake-up call

about food (You Are What You Eat) - hopefully, because the Candida diet is

healthy, we won't get cancer, etc, in later years.

I don't get it. Something tells me

> that it has to be more then just candida making us

> sick. I get overall nutrition should be good etc...,

> erst of the population around us doesn't make sense.

== Not everyone's diet and lifestyle is the same. Not everyone's genetic

makeup is the same. As we all keep saying around here, everyone is

different. And yes, there could be other things beside Candida making you

feel unwell. For instance, do you have mercury fillings in your mouth or

teeth with root canals? They can cause all sorts of problems.

== Candida can affect so many other parts of our body that the symptoms are

many and varied. Thyroid and adrenal problems are common.

== Have you seen a naturopath and discussed your situation? They are quite

familiar with Candida.

>

> Sorry so long, I'm just confused about this whole

> thing. Sometimes Candida feels like a made up story

> for people who have no diagnosis and are desperate for

== LOL - that's they way I felt years ago when my doctor told me I had

chronic fatigue and to go home and wait it out. It took me three years to

find out it was Candida and frankly, I was relieved. At least one knows how

to deal with Candida - diet is key.

== And finally, have you visited Bee Wilder's site at

/. Bee has successfully battled

candida and is a wealth of information.

I agree with confused. I don't understand why you are still on the

diet so strict after 7 years! It is very discouraging.

Here is a question for this diet thread: Is it okay to eat squash.

peas, potatoes and rice? Is there someplace in the files that

outlines the foods to eat? I don't have the Yeast Connection Book. I

have been going by Bee's suggestions.

Thanks,

I understand how you feel, for me it has been trial and error to see what foods

minimize my symptoms, unfortunately we don't have the support of the medical

profession...and most of them think that this is all in our heads... They do

not recognize, most of them, the illness at all... To minimize my response when

I consume sugars, I eat protein with it, or have a glass of milk (I follow

either the Insulin Resistance Diet guidelines or Carb Addicts Guidelines)...

Personally, I believe that for me this has to do with insulin levels and female

hormonal levels being out of balance (although doctor's tested me and since they

were within " normal " limits they disagree). However, I read a book called,

" It's My Ovaries Stupid " by a doctor that talks about undiagnosed illnesses

caused by female hormones being out of balance, even though testing shows them

as normal. Her theory is that you have to try the NATURAL HORMONES, although

testing shows up normal...because " normal " is different for each

individual...but she's in TEXAS... Some of the illnesses she talks about are

depression, anxiety, manic depression, and other's...it was a good read and

taught me a lot...especially about Physicians... She says the problem is that,

as we have discussed her, they treat the symptom, avoiding getting to the REAL

PROBLEM because they simply don't have the time..

That is so interesting that you mentioned hormones,

because FSH and Estradiol are actually the 2 hormones

that are out of range for me, and they are both

produced by the ovaries, I have known about this

inbalance for 3 years now and was told I could not

have children because my FSH is too high and my eggs

are probabaly no good. Well I did have a baby and I

was only 27 for God's sake and God willing will hav

another one soon, but I never had the same issues then

as I do today, dizziness, fuzzy head, brain fog,

anxiety, depression, hair loss, acne hot flashes,

muscles weakness etc...

In that book you mentioned what is the natural

solution to this hormone issue? I take chinese herbs,

but after 4 mos and about $1000 later I only see a

little improvement.

Thanks,

, I got rid of my sinus infection and cleared my ears pretty much by

cleaning up my house (I ripped out my carpets) and sticking to the diet. My

ENT got angry when I told him I got well from the Candida diet. I'll never

figure dr's out. :(

Other improvements are my bleeding problems, brain fog, blood pressure and

I'm losing weight.

Have you all read Neanderthin? It explains how

human's developed to eat the way they do, and how we

should eat like our ancestors. Eating a paleo diet

might help you a lot.

Paleo diet is based on the Neanderthin book:

http://www.neanderthin.com/site/

It's a study of the evolutionary growth of the human

diet. How we evolved, and what we ate as we evolved.

Human beings were hunter gatherers, and about 5,000

years ago we suddenly switched to agriculture.

Because we take so long to evolve as a species, it

takes us 10,000 years to adapt to dietary change.

Our bodies still want to eat what our ancestors ate.

The Neanderthin book studies what we did eat back

then, and tries to mimick that diet as closely as

possible in this modern age.

Based on a Simple Premise

I. A natural diet is best

II. Nature is defined as the absence of technology

III. Absent technology, grains, beans, potatoes, milk

and refined sugars are not edible to any Primates

(including Humans)

This way of eating doesn't just help you lose weight,

it can help with a lot of diseases, particularly

immune system related ones. The book explains how our

bodies see technology foods as foreign invaders, and

the immune system responds by trying to attack the

foods.

Our immune systems get so busy trying to deal with the

food we eat, the rest of our body gets out of control.

Hence we have arthritis, psoriasis, headaches, bad

skin, and on and on. I've read tons of health books

and this at the top of my list.

Luv,

Debby

Hi " Frog " :>

So the question remains. Why wasn't I

> occasionally had chocolate cake, coffee and spagettie over the next

> two years? First, I really suspect I have an immune system weakened

> by, not necessarily candida, but whatever causes the inflammation.

== I am with you on this one. I have known about, and have tried to " cure "

my Candida with various protocols for about 13 years.

== Are you aware that there is a school of thought out there that our

Candida has proliferated for a reason? That is is there to help mop up the

excess toxins in our system. You mentioned metal toxicity. I tested high

for mercury and lead last year - had all my amalgam fillings removed and am

very slowly addressing the heavy metals issue. So yeah, metals are a really

big issue for a lot of people. Mercury toxicity in particular.

== I also agree with you that it's the immune system that's out of whack and

that isn't something you can find a fast fix for. (Think thyroid and

adrenals as two good examples). " You are what you eat " - but I also think

that some of us are carrying around a lot of excess toxins - not only

candida but heavy metals and liver " gunk " and layers of caked toxins in the

intestines. Cleanses are of great benefit in getting rid of a lot of this

stuff. F'rinstance, how can the intestines absorb nutrients when they are

caked with stuff the consistency of rubber?

== I laughed at your description of your grandfather fogging up the house

with insecticide. Geez, I don't know if they're still doing it, but I've

been on airplanes where they sprayed the plane before you disembarked. I

don't know how old you are but I'm 64 and I know I have been exposed to a

LOT of toxins in my life. F'rinstance, I grew up on a farm and always

thought I had a healthy upbringing - fresh air and veggies, etc. But in

retrospect I can see that running behind the tractor as my father was

spraying the fruit trees (I remember the feel of the spray on my skin) to

tell him he was wanted on the phone, was probably not a good idea.

== And you mention stress! Ha! I know for a fact that stress flattens me.

If I have a tiff with the hubby, the next day I am dragging. I lost a close

relative a few months ago and I am still trying to climb out of the hole

from that. So anything you can do to lessen your stress, will also assist

in healing.

== Sorry for nattering on so but your email obviously struck a note with me.

In summation, I tried to focus just on eliminating the Candida for years and

I still have it. That's why I have added cleanses. I have hope that this

is the key.

Good health to you.

Cheers

Duncan, about your response below... by 'include that aspect' do you mean take

probiotics? And why does that not help with systemic candida? Sorry if I am

being slow!

I'm on the diet after 7 years, because when I go off it, I get sick.

Yes,that is very disappointing to have systemic candida, in one

sense, that I can't eat all the goodies eveyrone else can. However,

if I don't cheat (at least not in the sense of eating off teh diet

for days at a time as opposed to the occasional cup of coffee or

slice of pie, which would make me very ill right now), I never have

to worry about obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc. And I look

healthy, and have gobs of energy. Yes, it does sound ridiculous to

say " i'm cured of symptoms, " yet still have to stay on teh diet,

meaning Im conditionally cured. But the five years I was strict on

the diet were years of career promotion, athleticism, singing in a

band, having boundless energy, getting compliments on my physique.

Now I'm sickly. I don't have a choice: it's eithr cheat and be sick,

or stick to diet be the picture of health, but know you can't eat

like everyone else

The following website has a nice user friendly chart or foods you can and cannot

eat

on the candida diet. It corresponds pretty much to other into I've seen. I'd

print it up

and put it on my fridge if my printer worked....

You are right.

We are sick because our liver and gall bladder is congested with stones. And

poor liver function leads to poor kidney function to poor colon function.

All in all, when our liver gets congested, we don't assimilate the food we eat.

Even the best food or the best vitamins are not being assimilated correctly.

It's a bummer but it's true.

Candida starts to grow out of proportion in a response to our " unused food " .

You see, our body has to find a way to process all of this " unused food " as

it putrefies and Candida is the perfect candidate. Candida is actually there

as a survival mechanism to keep us healthy (or, as healthy as possible) and

the warning signs it sends the body is " hi I'm Candida and I'm going to make

you feel like shit by zapping your energy, making your muscles sore and making

it difficult to concentrate. "

The warning signs are there and it's up to us to fix it. A web site with

some very helpful information is _www.ener-chi.com_ (http://www.ener-chi.com)

Wishing you Health,
