Only if " distracting myself " involves walking out of the room or otherwise

getting away from the sound. I have ADD, SPD, and Misophonia. I don't have

OCD. Does she really understand what it is?

distracting yourself? She told me I have O.C.D., the obsessive part being the

sounds and that I need to distract myself because If I keep paying attention the

problem will get bigger. So have any of you been able to distract youselves and

concentrate on something else? i am having so much trouble with that. :(

yeah she does and I can't walk out of the room at school so that's kinda why she's telling me to ask you guys because we already have it solved for at home. To: Soundsensitivity Sent:

Distracting myself is important for handling my OCD. Alas, it doesn’t help with my misophonia.

Oh, school...the only thing I can think of is to find out if you can take your

courses via a computer. At my son's school, there are quite a few subjects that

can be done that way. Students go to the library during normal class time and

have their " class " on the computer, in a room by themselves or in an area with

headphones. School counselors would be able to advise you on what's available.

Otherwise, I can't think of anything to do within a regular classroom

environment...only earplugs or headphones, which usually aren't feasible.

Unfortunately, if distraction was possible with Misophonia, then it wouldn't be

as big a problem as it is.

If she thinks you have OCD, then there must be other issues. I don't have that,

so I can't offer any suggestions in that area.

I do have OCD... aside from this condition. Parts of this condition do remind

me of OCD, however I don't believe it to actually 'be' OCD. Distraction? Uh...

part of the problem is that I can't distract myself from the sounds. If I hear

a dog barking (one of my biggest triggers), I can't simply distract myself by

reading a book, or watching tv. Good heavens, I wish it were that simple! I

agree that paying attention to the problem will only make it bigger. But the

only way distraction works for me is if I put my iPod on and hear music which

completely blocks out the offending sound. But that doesn't really solve the

problem. Perhaps you should ask her how she would distract herself while having

a tooth pulled without pain meds... not a simple thing to do. Ha ha!

I do not believe I have OCD and neither do any medical practitioner I've met. If this were OCD them OCD Meds woud have helped. So far noone here that I can recall has ever posted that OCD Meds hep their Misophonia. Many people with Miso happen to have OCD but I personally believe they are separate. HeidiSent from my iPhone

The only time I'm able to distract myself is at a movie theater. The sound is so loud that 99% of the time I can tune out my trigger sounds.

I have tried with all of my heart and soul to distract myself but I cannot. I MUST remove myself from the trigger.

I got through school using the waxy type of earplugs (I cut them in half; foam might work too). I could adjust them in my ear to I could hear the teacher, but they helped with my trigger noises.

All the best,

I have OCD and Misophonia and I can distract myself from the OCD a bit and find

calm with the help of anti anxiety medication if I need to take it. Misophonia,

however, is something totally different. I cannot distract myself from the sound

at all. It's not that I'm working on concentrating on the sound. I certainly am

not. I'm trying to get my head on anything else but the sound. That does not

work. The discomfort and pain and agitation it causes are real and not on a

" loop " track like my OCD where the thought/obsession goes around and around in

my head. It's different. The sound is from outside my body and my body

experiences it as something downright horrendously awful. I'm not thinking the

sound bothers me. The sound does bother me. Bother being a very light word for

what Misophonia actually does to me.

I have been on medications for OCD (but cannot take them successfully without

being sick) and they did not help. The only ting that helps for Misophonia, mine

at least, is getting the heck away from the sound or covering the sound up with

something else, but the feelings that the sound brought on linger for a while

afterwards. Sometimes for a long while afterwards. Misophonia is experienced as

a physical reaction to sound. Not a thought or obsessive reaction to something

like germs or skin picking or anything like that. It's very different in my

opinion.

Not sure what to do about school other than with the classes you cannot bare,

see if they have them offered online. That is the only way I can handle school.

Best of luck to you.

My therapist has helped me with the use of imagery, positive self talk, and breathing. Hope that helps To: "Soundsensitivity " <Soundsensitivity > Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2012 9:04 PM Subject: Success with Misophonia?
