Welcome Chrissy!  You and I could be twins, our stories are so similar.  There are so many great people in this group, you will find support and comfort here.  I have the same situation with my dog - I'm okay with her or the cats eating, but when other people eat, especially family or close friends, it drives me berserk too.  And movies are terrible - I wish I could go more often.  I usually sit in the very back of the theatre, and I bring ear plugs.  Movies are usually so loud anyway, a little dampening from the ear plugs still enables me to hear, but it drowns out the popcorn chewers and people who decide to open noisy bags or cough.

It's wonderful that the brave souls who were interviewed for 20/20 were so honest and open - now we all have a place to share and understand more.  You'll hear lots about coping ideas here and hopefully one day, a cure.

Hi, Im new here so I apologize if Im using the topic board incorrectly. I haven't looked at the entire forum yet.

I don't even know where to begin. Im so amazed that what I've been experiencing most my life is real and Im not crazy! My sister sent me a txt with a link about misophonia after she watched the 20/20 episode. She told me while watching it she said, " Holy crap thats Chrissy! " . Before tonight, the only thing I could relate to was the song " Cell Block Tango " from the musical Chicago... The part where she " fires 2 warning shots into his head " for popping his gum ;)

Anyway, I'm 34 yrs old and I remember the day this all began. I was in middle school taking a test and the kid sitting infront of me was chewing gum loudy! I could not concentrate on my test at all. Its been a downward spiral since then.

Today Im bothering by all disgusting mouth noises (chewing loudly, slurping, crunching, other people kissing, people sucking their teeth, etc), the sound of people crinkling a potato chip bag, people taking plastic of off candy boxes, and the clack clack of high heels and the inhaling sounds when people eat pizza and suck up the cheese. Im sure there are more.

Over the years I've had to endure my friends, and coworkers making sounds on purpose. I envision myself punching them in the face while they laugh. Some people will notice my death stare and apologize :)

My mom constantly tells me how nasty I am and that " everything bothers me " . It pisses me off. Hopefully I'll get the support from my mom and sister now that this is a real condition. Especially because they bother me the most with their noises. I live alone so Im not subjected to it everyday.

I've read that there isnt a cure for this, but I think if most people learned manners while eating, then most of my problem would be gone. Its amazing how many people chew and talk with their mouths open! For some reason when my dogs eat their crunchy dog food, it doesnt bother me. I actually find it to be really cute. However, if you are an adult and sounding like an animal, then Im going to have an issue.

I try to avoid going to the movies at all costs. Ticket prices are too expensive to be concentrating only on the loud popcorn crunchers and candy wrapper noises.

When I go out to restaurants, I cringe when a table orders chips and salsa!!

I always thought I had bionic ears because even if my back was someone, I could point out the person who was crunching or popping gum.

When im forced to endure these horrible sounds, I can feel my blood pressure rise. I also think horrible thoughts. The kindest one I'll admit to one here is that I wish their teeth would fall out.. and punching them in the face. Lately, I've been getting the urge to flee. I just feel so angry! Luckily I dont act on my feelings. I just try to take myself out of the situation.

Giving nice hints to people dont work at all.

For instance:

-Wow, that gum must really be good, I can hear you chewing it all the way over here. Or;

-If your drink/soup is too hot, wait till it cools off so you dont have to slurp it, and you can enjoy it more.

I've even showed people how they can eat chips quietly!

I think the most extreme thing I've done is email KITKAT and complain about their annoying crunching commercials.I seriously hate them and can not tolerate them at all. They sent me back some stupid response, then they proceeded to make another equally annoying crunching commercial. Hmmm maybe we can start a petition if you guys feel the same way ;)

To the person who talked about the KitKat commercial.. yes!!! I mentioned that

in one of the videos I filmed for the segment. lol. I didn't mention KitKat

specifically since I don't think they like to use brand names, but I talked

about annoying food commercials and how people that don't have Misophonia don't

even think about it when they're making them. I get the idea of it being clever,

but I have to either mute the tv, change the channel or leave the room. I can't

handle it.

Welcome Chrissy! We are glad you found us, but sad you also deal with this.

That Kit Kat commercial drove me to the point of throwing something at the

tv,having to run for the remote or leave the room quickly. Ironically now

though, it doesn't bother me. I just hum the song and think of how ironic it is

that the words of the song(back when they used to actually sing the commercial)

were " give me a break " , because I'd like a break from all of this torture. HA

HA!

Hi new member,You are not alone. Interestingly, I've been in this group for a couple of months now and I just posted last night as well. I think if you read my intro, subject title "Too many triggers to count", you will find that you and I are VERY similar.Keep reading, there is a lot of support here and that feels great.
