Hi Theresa,

I’m interested in the bronch/reflux findings... Have always been aware too much food/fluid won’t settle easy, and don’t eat late....

But lately, woke in middle of night & could feel fluid moving up around, nearly up as far as throat, most unpleasant, bitter ?bile... Noticing this more during daytime hours too, really have to be conscious to keep upright to get to low filing, drawers, cupboards... Hmmm, is this reflux? Am seeing GP Wednesday, hope will have time to ask about it...,

Cheers.

Hi Joy,

You definitely have symptoms of acid reflux known also as GERD. Bad thing about this is the stuff that backs up in your throat can also aspirate into the lungs. It can also cause damage to your esophagus. I am on Prevacid twice a day which is quite potent to prevent this. Most take one a day. There are many rx meds out there for this problem.

Before the doc puts you on a med you can help by not eating 3 hours before bedtime. Don't drink anything caustic like Apricot (one of my favs). I used to drink tea which calmed me.

Good luck and take care of this soon.

Stay well and happy,

Nan

Joy, this definitely sounds like GERD (GastroEsophageal Reflux

Disease) to me. I've had it for years. Thought it was under control

until recently, but I've been waking with bad heartburn almost every

day for the last few weeks, despite taking a lot of medication,

elevating my head when sleeping (or trying to!), and avoiding acidic

foods.

Theresa, I'm definitely interested in any research connecting GERD

with bronch. Are you planning to post it to the group, or did you need

individual e-mail addresses?

Nan, I think that's how my lungs were damaged--from aspirating the

acid (or inhaling fumes from the acid reflux). At least the docs seem

to think that's a feasible explanation. I'm not a smoker, and though I

did have pneumonia just before my bronch was diagnosed last fall, I've

never had a lot of lung infections or breathing problems.

I've tried Prevacid, but it didn't work well for me, as I recall. I've

also tried Protonix, Zantac and a host of others. Prilosec and Nexium

have worked best for me. I currently take 3 capsules of generic

Prilosec a day, and I'm still getting breakthrough heartburn,

hoarseness and occasional esophageal spasms. (Nexium isn't covered by

my health plan.)

I had to stop drinking coffee because of the acid, but occasionally, I

take a risk, especially for a decaf mocha with whipped cream. Yummy!

<dreamy, wistful smile> I sometimes try adding creamer or milk to help

cut the acid in the coffee, but that doesn't always work; so I just

don't drink it very often. It's really hard to resist, though, if I'm

near a Starbuck's or similar coffee place!

I wouldn't doubt some of my woes were caused from acid reflux. Mine was so bad I would upchuck on a regular basis. Almost like Bulimia. When mine did get bad I didn't forego my coffee (heaven forbid!) but I would go to bland foods like oatmeal, cottage cheese, cream of wheat, etc. Yum huh? I would do this for a couple to few days and things would settle down. I also drank tea with honey.

I am on the Prevacid twice a day because it got worse. I am going in for a test mid September. An EGD to look for a bleeding ulcer/h. pylori bacteria which may be causing more grief. I need a new body.
