Guest guest
I remember reading an article that explained what marks the difference between misophonia and the irritation most people feel about certain noises like dripping taps. I think it had something to do with the physiological reaction but I can't remember. Can anyone help with a reference or their own view? Guest guest
Well, misophonia is more than " irritation " , it is an impairment. This may not be the reference you remember, but someone once wrote: if you don't like eggs, that is a preference. If you NEVER EVER eat eggs, that's a quirk. But if you cannot stand being in the same room as someone else eating eggs, that's an impairment (because your world is restricted by what's going on around you). Misophonia is an impairment - it cripples our ability to enjoy or even participate in social interaction where we hear persistent trigger sounds. Generally, our intense need, either to get out of the area where the trigger occurs, or else to block our ears (or our brain by " shouting " inside our head), impairs our ability to function normally in those everyday situations. (That " someone once wrote " is actually from p 140 of " Kids in the Syndrome Mix " (2007) by L Kutscher. It happens to be in the chapter on Sensory Integration Disorder.). > > I remember reading an article that explained what marks the difference between misophonia and the irritation most people feel about certain noises like dripping taps.
