Guest guest
I lived in the country and LOVED it. Yes it's true sound carries and you can hear people miles away, but for me it was only if I was outside. I always thought that was kinda funny that I could hear things so clearly when it was so far away. But as soon as I went in my house, it was quiet. But the quiet does make sounds you don't want to hear more noticeable, such as bluejays squawking for me. Eeek. The manure smell was hard a first but I got used to it fast. We just moved out of state and back to an apartment last December and lets just say I miss my farm! I would much rather live in the country! I'm totally overwhelmed with sound now. > > Country living doesn't guarentee peace and quiet. Can hear neighbors 1/4 of a mile away just talking loudly let alone their required 4 wheelers and other utility vehicles. And the usual quiet makes the noises that much more noticable and annoying. > The odors from manure lagoons and spreaders are none-to-pleasant to the uninitiated. > Then there are the regular meetings of the local militia and their Sunday afternoon shoot-fests. > But I must admit that overall life is generally easier in the country. >

Guest guest
I grew up in the suburbs and spent my first year of college in the country. I hated it and left for the city and never looked back. In fact I always tell my wife that our next move will be to " somewhere bigger. " I don't have to worry about hearing lip smacking in a packed restaurant, and traffic noise helps me sleep. I like to think of the noises of a city as a sort of sound " fog " that obscures all but the loudest things that manage to break through. There's some biological basis to this, too. When things are quiet in nature, it means danger. Animals' (including humans') ears turn up the " gain " on their hearing when there's little to no ambient sound, making even the faintest sounds pop out. > > > > > > Country living doesn't guarentee peace and quiet.
