Guest guest
Wouldn't it be amazing if we could have a volume control on our ears?! I doubt I would ever go above a 2 on a control of 0-10 and I realize we need some volume for emergencies or those who have children, etc. but what a blessing it would be... they have hearing aids that turn UP the volume; maybe someday they will make one that turns it down. Guest guest
That would be nice.My mom's bedroom is across the house from me.. and I can hear when she eats something crunchy, clips her nails, or pushes the buttons on the home telephone (they beep as you push them). Drives me crazy--I hear these things OVER the television or whatever I have going in my bedroom. I hate having such good hearing. --------------------------------------------------------- ♥ " Hope is more than a word; it's a state of being. It's a firm belief God will come through. Guest guest
I've often had those same thoughts. The closest I've come to having a volume control is via my maskers. But that only controls turning up white noise in my ear hence blocking undesirable noise. Unfortunately, they don't actually turn down hearing. > > Wouldn't it be amazing if we could have a volume control on our ears?! Guest guest
There is in fact a volume control in the ear, the stapedius muscle. This contracts in response to loud sound, tightening the ossicular chain and reducing the sound entering the cochlea. It is not under voluntary control, but can also be activated by light touch around the ear, and in sensitive people by air movement as when the ear is approached by a wisp of cotton wool. The only people I have ever found with an absent stapedial reflex, other than from obvious ear disease, are some autistic children, so it is clearly a very important muscle, but I still struggle to understand exactly what it does and why. ********************************************************************* > > Wouldn't it be amazing if we could have a volume control on our ears?! Guest guest
I am constantly adjusting my foam earplugs to implement a volume control. Like others here, I pluck one if I need to talk to someone, and I adjust the noise volume in my headphones. ---- acbear13 wrote: > Wouldn't it be amazing if we could have a volume control on our ears?! Guest guest
This is a valid thought. I've often thought about how we can close our eyelids, and while we can still sense light through closed lids, we can at least block out most other visual stimuli. Isn't moderation key with all of our senses? So it'd make sense to have a way to moderate the level of all of our sensory stimulation, including hearing. Sadly, I've found earplugs do nothing more than muffle the sounds I'd actually want to still hear while avoiding the trigger sounds. > > > > > Wouldn't it be amazing if we could have a volume control on our ears?!
