I am fairly certain it is neurological--at least for me. I didn't get it at a child.. I was 23 and it came hand in hand with three other neurological conditions.. all 4 started at the same time and all 4 have progressively gotten worse in the last 2-3 years.

So we all have this affliction.

The question is WHY do we have it?

From where does it come?

Why do you think you have all this sound sensitivity?

Have you had it since very young or did it just begin 'out of the blue'

somehow later in life?

What caused this to happen to you do you think?

Or do you know?

As for my daughter, it started when she was about 9 or 10, and she shares a room with her sister.  Her sister had a cold, was sound asleep, and my daughter could not sleep because " Sissy  is breathing too loud " ...My reaction after going in and STRAINING to hear this faint nose breathing...was " ARE YOU CRAZY...You can barely hear that!!! " ...however, after time, and many sleepless nights I realised that to her...this is real...

As to what caused it? I have no idea...which makes me think it is also hard wired, and a default in the brain processing somewhere.

Looking back, I had a very severe problem with my siblings and t.v. when I was about 12.  I screamed at them because I could hear the tv...even though they strained to hear what was already a super low volume.  I would get into fits of rage, and they all called me crazy.  I don't believe I had misophonia...because I don't have it now...

But, my other daughter is also showing signs as she cannot tolerate my husband's noises of breathing, clearing his throat, or snorting...she will scream and leave the computer (it is next to his chair in the living room..)

So I don't know why...I believe it is a genetic in nature also...but it is very very heart breaking and I hope to God they find a cure or better ways to cope than isolating oneself from the world...

Mine started as a young child when I was forced to share a room with my sister who happened to snore and grind her teeth in her sleep. I told my parents but they didnt believe I was that bothered by the sounds. I was just a child so I had no control over the situation. I was essentially forced to put up with the sounds and so I began to resent the sounds as well as the lack of control. I think if my parents had simply moved me out of the room, the classical conditioning would not have occurred to the extent which it has. I had to share a room with my sister and her noises for many years so I had lots of time to develop a complex. I had a surgery a while back that left me with significant pain in my left leg. My doctor

said there was nothing wrong with me for several months. Well, after a while my leg started hurting worse and worse, so badly I wanted to cut my leg off. A few months ago I went to a specialist. I wrote a 2 page letter of what I wanted to say to him because I was so afraid he wouldnt believe me. After I read it he said "I believe you", and he found the nerve damage. This was a year ago and my leg feels almost normal now. I believe the severe pain was worsened by the dismissal of my original doctor. The more helpless I felt the more my leg hurt. I think the same thing happened with my sound sensitivity. Since nobody believed me back then I became rather obsessed with the noises and they began bothering me more and more. Mine started when I was 8 while my family was remodeling our house. I did not have to share a bed room (only child) but I did have to share a bathroom with my parents that connected to both of our rooms. We knocked the majority of our walls down in the process, so everything was very open. There was not much insulation to weaken the sounds. This is when I started using very loud fans on the highest setting no matter how cold it was!Sent from my iPhone
