Guest guest
All of my life I have had these irritants. The triggers for me are more prevalant as I'm trying to sleep. I'm now an insomniac. I go many days with no sleep at all, because I can't find peace enough for it. My triggers are a ticking clock. We no longer have any clocks in this house that tick. Even a lot of digital clocks tick once every minute when the display would switch over the minute. My cell phone is now my alram clock, as it doesn't make ticking noises. The electrical hum of the house drives me crazy. My best nights of sleep have been when we had a storm roll through and the electricity was knocked out. I also don't like white noise. it echos in my head, and sounds like a jet engine is trying to land on me. Someone cutting nails. I couldn't even cut my kids nails when the were babies, and couldn't be in the same room with them when my husband trimmed them. Dog licking...i used to scream at him to leave the room. He has since passed away, and I refuse to get another pet, as the licking drove me insane. I don't get excessively angry with all of this, but my skin gets all scratchy, my arms and legs get twitchy, and my stomach rolls, and I feel like I want to crawl out of my skin when hearing these noises. I was finally sent to a sleep disorder specialist, he had me try relaxation exercises, only after about 2 minutes, he could tell it wasn't working. At this point, I was near tears and hadn't slept in about 5 days. I told him it wasn't working because his clock was tick tocking in my ear (it was up on the wall, near the ceiling, on the other side of the room, about 15 feet from me, but felt like it was sitting in my lap ready to explode ike a bomb), and I felt like ripping it off the wall and throwing it out a window. He then told me I had hyperacusis. He recommended I put in ear plugs. Here is the problem with ear plugs or headphones for me....it makes my own body sounds echo, including my breathing, swallowing, etc...and these sounds make me angry. After seeing the 20/20 episode, I realize it might be this misophonia. Though chewing and eating, which seem to be most of your triggers, aren't a trigger for me. I have taken many steps to try to help me sleep at night, but struggle with it.
