Guest guest
Gum is up there but eating with your mouth open or scraping silverware gets me worse and eating chips, rattling the bag is also a bad trigger. Sometime I cannot eat chips, the sound of my own eating brothers me.Subject: [spam 6.70] Gum sharing! To: Soundsensitivity Date: Thursday, May 24, 2012, 5:07 AM Is it just me and my condition noticing this, or is it true that gum is the number 1 shared item in the universe?!?!?! Guest guest
Open mouth chewing is the biggest trigger for me too. I can handle gum when the mouth is closed ... it's just that gum practically screams to its user's " open mouth chew me ... you know you want to ... and go ahead and amuse your self with gum popping ... manners don't count when its gum " . It's like 90% of people say its impolite to chew with your mouth open with the exception of gum. I suppose because it is such a work out for the mouth that people practically have to open their mouth when chewing it! Their is such an oral fixation with gum chewing that people just can't help themselves. I also say that of all the open mouth chewing, open mouth chewing gum is my worst trigger. I think this is because my sister developed terrible gum chewing habits at a young age and I just sort of fixated on the issue. My triggers started with gum and progressed to any sort of open mouth chewing in general, now all I have to do is see it and I'm bothered! Than came breathing associated with eating, breathing while they still have food in their mouth ... thats an open mouth breathing combo! Ugh, I'm getting upset just thinking about it! > > > Subject: [spam 6.70] Gum sharing! > To: Soundsensitivity > Date: Thursday, May 24, 2012, 5:07 AM > > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > Is it just me and my condition noticing this, or is it true that gum is the number 1 shared item in the universe?!?!?! Guest guest
I agree. Gum chewing and especially popping is my number one trigger. I react instantly with anger and a strong urge to pounce. As Dr. mentioned in the 20/20 piece, we are experiencing " fight or flight " . It's not just rage--rage stems from fear or pain. Our brains (specifically the Amygdala) are " miss-wired " and perceive some sounds to be threatening. (This includes visual, tactile and olfactory triggers.) That's why I've learned avoidance techniques. I almost struck a woman in a store because I waited too long to escape her loud, clunky footsteps. Because I didn't flee, my fight response kicked in. It scared me that I could actually get violent even if for the sake of self-preservation. A book by Sharon Heller called " Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight " explains how sensory disorders work. Find it on Amazon .com for about $10.
