Guest guest
My daughter has recently been accepted for SSI benefits. I wish I had done this back when she was entitled at 18, but I didn’t want to burden the system as long I could carry expenses – silly me… Now I feel like I’ve denied my daughter thousands of dollars that could have been used for her benefit. She is about to turn 20 and lives in a residential school. I know that I can contact SocSec, but I was just wondering what expenses everyone uses each month to use up the money and not have her assets exceed $2,000? I’ve heard that people charge their child rent even if it is just to hold a room free in their house for home visits. The parents then take that rent money and apply it to a special needs trust. Curious if anyone could tell me how much rent they charge or how they figure expenses?I know that once she is placed in a group home that all the money will be used to support her there and I assume the money will go directly to them.I also received a lump sum back payment which I think I need to handle separately but not sure exactly how just yet. Any advice. thoughts, or experiences would be appreciated. Feel free to email me privately. Regards Loren
