My wife used to tell me that when she was sick and would cough and sneeze at night , she could see the torment on my face and in my body, even though I never woke up , probably too tiredand deeply asleep to do so. This effects us on such a deep and unconscious level. I am a very patient and tolerant person by nature, except when it comes to triggers! It turns me into Hannibal Lechter!!It is my belief that this condition cannot be treated with desensitization. I have tried it with and it had no effect whatsoever. I get woke up out of a very deep sleep by my triggers. My husband has told me that he can see that I am in my deep stage of sleep yet if a dog barks (wort trigger at the moment), I'm wide awake instantly. However, our old neighbor used to go out and shoot target practice sometimes really late at night (we lived on a farm and the neighbor was practicing for special ops in the secret service) and my husband told me I slept right through the gunshots that were far louder than the dog barking.

Colleen, I've had this for 55 years too. All the exposure I have endured didn't reduce the symptoms. Hyper-vigilance is a great term for our state of mind. To me it means somewhere in our subconscious we must feel that our survival is being threatened. Either that or something in our present environment is reminiscent of a time when we were in danger of some sortand our senses are being restimulated by the trigger sounds or sights. Something like that. I drive myself crazy trying to figure it out!Excuse me I have to go........ I'm having someone for

dinner:)Mike To: Soundsensitivity Sent: Sunday, May 27, 2012 2:11 PM Subject: Re: has anyone tried this

Mike,

I agree with you about desensitization. I was told by my OT's that purposely exposing myself to triggers could keep me in a hyper-vigilant state and sabotage the therapy I was doing at the time. Besides, I'm exposed to so many triggers without trying that I'm already miserable enough. If I was going to acclimate to these sounds, I'd have done it by now (over 55 years).

Hannibal Lechter? You have a good sense of humor. Thanks.
