Guest guest
I withdrew from people, well relationships 23 years ago and have just hung out with my Dachshunds. People had become such a huge irritant that I just closed the door on even trying. The emotional issues around anger and misunderstanding had become so intense that I would self medicate and have problems with employment due to exhaustion and the inability to concentrate. My dogs do not bother me except when they chew their paws or skin, but it's not something that sends my over the edge. Now OTHER people's dogs can bother me,but since I am not around other people very much it isn't a huge problem. I have to say that animal noises for the most part are not a big trigger, I do much better when with them.Sent from my iPad Just curious. Since a lot of people with misophonia tend to withdraw from people (understandably so) I wondered if the rest of you find companionship in pets? Do you have a hard time dealing with pet noises as well? I have had this misophonia issue for as long as I can remember. I remember being only a few years old & yelling at my sister for "smacking" her food. She's my twin and her case of misophonia is WAY worse than mine. See, I get raging angry, but I silently curse & yell. If I feel like I can't be around a certain person & their noise any longer, I will get away quickly. She can't. She rages wherever she's at. She's been known to give a little slap to other family members over their eating noises. Anyways, the point is, pets. I have 3 cats, a weiner dog, a hamster & for a temporary time right now, a turtle. The worst noise for me is smacking or crunching. There are others that send me into a bling rage, but the most common is eating noises. However, I notice that when my cat is licking her water, it doesn't even bother me! The dog though, he can get me a tad crazy, but nothing like the sound of real people doing it. It's just a different sound to me. Is it the same with you? While my pets eating/drinking sounds don't bother me near as much as people's do, they do have noises that really send me into a hysterical rage. For instance, one of my cats scratches at my bedroom window every single night about 1-2 AM! She does it early in the morning too. Any time she pleases, she'll scratch her claws on my window. Oh my! It is a sound that truly makes me see red. She never lets up until I get her inside the house. It's the worst sound -- a cat's claws on a window. Worse than nails on chalkboard! My other cats & pets really don't make disturbing sounds at all. When the window-clawer meows over & over and over while I'm trying to sleep, it can get to me. She's the only one who's high maintenance though. Hubert, my hamster, he doesn't EVER bother me except when he chews on his plastic food holder, which isn't often. He does it if food is stuck in the container. It's annoying, but pets (except the window-clawer) don't bother me near as much as people. My pets are pretty quiet though. Most of them don't make much racket. When my darn weiner dog barks over & over for nothing, I will get angry & yell if it's really unbearable/continuous. Guest guest
I have many pets and I've thought about this a lot. Some stuff totally gets my and other stuff is OK and I can't really figure out why. I have a guinea pick that bites at her cage wire when she wants me to give her something and I want to smack her! I had a horse that slurped her bran mash with horrific noises and I thought it was funny, though I would stay around to listen for very long. I cannot stand for my dog to continuously bark which she will do sometimes. I'm not sure if it's the noise or what. Someone else I was with yesterday, while my dog was barking, said she didn't even hear it! To me it was so loud. There is sometimes an association between the noise and something being asked of me. Sounds weird I know. I can't stand a noise from an animal when I have to do something. I've tried to figure this one out, but have no insight. At 11:11 PM 8/3/2012, you wrote: Just curious. Guest guest
Dog barking is one of my worst triggers. I finally got a dog, partly to understand why they do it. I always assume a dog who barks incessantly is miserable and lonely. Eventually my dog developed bad allergies. He licked constantly no matter what we tried for him. It became a nightmare. His barking was never an issue for me because I was in control of it and could stop him. Since he wasn't neglected or tied up, he only barked when he was happy and exuberant. My second dog was an adult when I got her and I made sure she didn't have allergies. We had a lot of cats, and they were much harder to control when they want to lick or scratch. I finally stopped getting new ones when the older one died.
Guest guest
I find it easier to deal with pets. I share what many here mention: the frustration with the licking sounds. One of my friends (the only one even remotely tolerant of my issue) was curious as to why people swallowing/drinking bothered me, but it didn't bother me when it was my dog. I think it's because I can't hear the dog swallow, but can hear the lapping. My dog's barking doesn't bother me. Others' doesn't bother me if it's close up. Like most noises, if it's distant, it drives me nuts. > > Just curious. Guest guest
I was just thinking about this a couple days ago...why doesn't my dog - with his flopping jowls, food flying out, water dripping everywhere and the crunching, slobbering noises he makes while chowing down bother me in the slightest?! I think for me it's because I understand he's a dog...he can't help it and does not even understand eating manners that humans should....I also am not terribly bothered when it is a baby, handicapped or elderly person - probably for the same reasons - they can't really help it. Odd huh? Your pets probably infuriate you more when your tired because of just that - you're tired - you should be sleeping, but the little monster just. won't. stop.!! I get angry at just about any noise when I'm trying to sleep! Thanks for sharing your post - it gave me something to think about! > > Just curious. Guest guest
I'm the same way- I don't get upset with people who have special needs, elderly (for the most part), babies, or animals. Interesting stuff. I get triggered by my dogs when they rearrange their tongues. I get triggered by babies, elderly and handicapped people if they make mouth noises. I get triggered by sounds, not by intentions or lack thereof. > > > > Just curious. > > > > What about ya'll? > > >
