Lynn,

From what I understand, if you go on medicare you usually sign up for supplement

with Secure Horizons or in Kaiser's case Kaiser's medicare supplemental

insurance. When I asked our social worker about what is the best insurance to

have, she said medicare. Remember it's free. Now as to whether you are

required to go on it I find that hard to believe but haven't checked into it.

You might check with your HMO and see if they offer a supplemental insurance

that goes along with the medicare. The doctor told us that the social worker

from their tx team was the one to ask insurance questions and very often they

will help you with the process. Otherwise maybe their coordinator might help.

Don't give up the disability income.

My mom who is 78 and lives with us is on medicare and has an HMO...and still

has some bills to pay...when she sees a doctor the medicare pays....and then

HMO picks up what is left....she pays nothing for that...hosp. is a little

different...she has had 2 strokes in the last 2 yrs and 2 surgeries...there

is very little to pay though...We are just now looking for some help because

she has lost her HMO due to the place where she used to work has dropped

her...and paying for it by herself or ourselves is too much...we did hear of

HMO's thru her medicare...we are working with a social worker now to get some

help....

Hope this helps a little...

Secure Horizons is a free HMO that goes along with Medicare. Course, I'm not

real happy with the way they are handling Jacquelyn, although I strongly feel

that she and her doctor need to confront that situation and it would be

resolved. Kaiser has a supplemental insurance to medicare which also costs

nothing and covers almost everything except a small co-pay and I'm sure there

are

others out there. It's a hassle to deal with this but if you stick to it you

can

usually get the help you need. course sometimes dealing with these HMO's can

drive you into a mental institution.
