Good Morning, I’m looking for some clarity regarding the CPT coding for stem cell harvesting and collection. Could you please share the CPT codes that are used for obtaining insurance approvals for Apheresis? We have them arrive prior to the preparative regimen but far in advance. If you’re not going to use the cells in the near future, then why would you want to take on the responsibility of storing cells? If it’s for a future transplant, I’d have them stay where they are until you’re ready to move forward. As for who pays for shipping, if your center is going to do a transplant and bill for it then it makes sense to me that the transplanting center would accept responsibility for the shipping costs. However, that’s just a personal opinion. We have a charge for processing and cryopreserving cells but we don’t have a storage charge. We have language in our collection consents that we will hold a minimum of “X” years but after that we would have the right to dispose of the cells. So far we’ve only disposed of cells of patients who’ve passed away, but we wanted to have the right to stop storing them if it became a capacity issue in the future. We don’t have a storage charge because we didn’t want to get into annual billing and worry about what happens when someone can no longer afford to pay a storage fee. Wondering how your facility handles this situation: Patient has cryopreserved stem cells (either status post-transplant or harvested and stored); they have requested that the cells be shipped to your facility; again for either storage or future transplant. 1) Who pays for the shipment?2) Once received, is there a storage fee for the cells? If so, how long are the cells stored? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
