fight with my doctor if I was low on mine. I have been taking them way too

many years now. I won't run out, no matter what. I am taking 6 a day, and

have taken less when I had to, but not ever as low as 1 or 1 1/2. You have

to tell him what happened and they would make it right. How horrible this

must be. I would change doctors or go to ER for help. Oh, I feel for you.

Poor thing.

Netty,

Have you heard of fentanyl patches? They are like nicotine patches but for pain

and I understand you wear them for several days at a time, getting an even dose

of pain during that period. I am going to talk to my doctor about using them

this Thursday. Maybe you could talk to your doctor about using them and just

having a few narcotics for breakthrough pain. That way you wouldn't have to

keep going through this. It is just terrible.

It's hard to get them or it is here in Las Vegas.. This place cares only

about visitors not about residents..

My heart goes out to Netty too.. It's so , so hard. You have to jump

through hoops to get a doctor to prescribe them.. I think the propaganda

portrayed on TV has influenced this crack down so those of us that need the

medication can't get it or forced to buy of the streets. It's a hell of a trap

we are being forced to live through..Feeling part time relief and going

without is added hell.

My doctor wants me to go to a pain management, the catch my insurance

makes me stay in the doctors they want which means a co-pay and traveling and

I have no transportation. I believe they have sentenced me to death, I'm

caught in a trap, I wish we were well enough to fight back.

take care Netty we are pulling for you

When I was using opiods for pain management (peripheral nerve

degradation, small nerve fiber count at 10% of normal, etc., etc.), we

switched to the patches when the number of oxycodone pills got too high.

The best thing about them is the blood level of Fentanyl (generic name -

duragesic) remains constant. I would then use the oxycodones for

breakthrough pain.

The bad part of my situation was that the narcotics were doing nothing

for the pain directly, but were just dulling my senses. I went through

a six-week in-patient pain program at s Hopkins during which I was

taken off all narcotics. With no narcotics in my systems, the pain

levels were the same as when I was on 150 mcg duragesic patch, 40 mg

oxycodone, and 400 mg Ultram per day.

We are now trying every other trick in the book for the pain, such as

anticonvulsants, neurotropics (like Lyrica), anti-depressants, etc. I

can use Tylenol with codeine for bad breakthrough pain, knowing that the

real benefit is that I will be in la-la land within 15 minutes. And so

it has gone for many years now. But if the opiods do the trick for you,

I believe the patches are the best way to go.
