Just wondering--alcoholism..

Seems like we have our fair share of recovering alcoholics on this list--I,

too, have been in recovery for over 24 years......

My ex-husband deals a lot with EAP programs--and is always going to conferences

to learn more about them.  He told me that he heard , from one of the experts

out there, that MANY people who are alcoholics in recovery---develop

fibromyalgia.

Has that theory been tested?  I know that I always read that people with FMS

were usually in a car accident--or had some type of trauma to their body.  SO--I

used to think that maybe the fact that I had a complete hysterectomy in

1993---then fibro came along in 1994----that THAT was my trauma to the body.....

NOW, I am wondering if the alcoholism is also part of this syndrome.

Sorry---I am always thinking....and WONDERING......WHY???? (not that there is

much I can do about it if I DID find the answer!!!)

Well, I've got 12 years in Recovery and there's no doubt that Alcohol

Abuse is a trauma to the total body. I used to help my father install

formica countertops around the age of fourteen-fifteen or so; Methyl

Ethel Ketone in the Weldwood Glue we used, Toluene too probably. Went

to work and used Lacquer Thinner, Methyl Ethel Ketone again and other

unknown inhalants that would leave you pouring yourself down the

stairs to go outside to get some air. Then alcohol.

I developed dropfoot, brain damage, cognitive impairment, fatigue,

fibro-like body pain.... joints, muscles, skin to touch. Got labeled

with everything from ADHD to Bi-Polar, a number of -myalgias....

We've also read that there may be a viral component to some of these

Diseases, no doubt another Trauma to the body!

As for WHY? Why not?

As we well know, it's not what we did or didn't do, but what we do

from this moment on, Eh?

Peace and Love,

Byron

Hi Bryon, all,

finally got up and found my damn password etc for this site (get lazy..). I have

14 plus some years in recovery for NA/ AA. never shot up anything, but was a

chain almost pot smoker, and did do assorted other substances..

also was exposed to weird chemicals via jobs (jet engine assembly plant among

others), so with the weird chemicals .. who knows? I don't actually know anyone

in either recovery group with this.. or wait; one person I met with lots more

years in AA than I have.

somehow I think this is .. well, some of us have genetics which give us the

'gift' of being more inclined than others to get it. whether we also have that

other card -'allergy' to alcohol,or the hard wired brain of a tendency to become

addicted to anything bringing in instant gratification- well .. think this is

simply coincidental as are many other things..

the alcohol thing ran on both sides of my family. as with most my age (60) I

know very little about past medical histories on either side; they just aren't

there. I think this factor limits us a great deal.. a shame, but something about

which we can do nothing. although anyone who can afford to have genetic testing

done, this might shed some light..

having been on this site and another -CFSME- for years I've given up trying to

figure out the 'why' of it or the .. what 'did' this to me, i.e. where did I

catch .. this?!

just my thoughts..

Hi--

I do remember a guy who was very ill from mold and did a detox/ had his home

detoxed (or possibly moved..? not certain; this was years ago). He made mention

of a doctor named Shoemaker. His belief was that the mold was the main issue.

I'm not sure it is, but one certainly does want to do whatever they can to live

'mold free' if at all possible. sometimes it is anything but; areas/ towns can

be heavy with mold just as can be a neighborhood or a home. Rather an insidious

toxin and I must confess to not knowing much about it.

i am fairly certain I live with it as well.. Not much I can do for this at the

moment either..

Air purifier, out take fan, decent AC, etc.
