I am so glad to see you back again, Susie, I would not dream of

contradicting you (not yet, anyway).

Don't forget, though, that we don't have the USDA over here and there

are no zealous low-carbers over here either, so far as I can make

out, just the vast numbers that eat too much of the other two choices

without thinking about scientific nutrition at all. We do have a lot

of university clinics though and university nutrition departments and

a joint German/Austrian/Swiss nutritional agency and some European

studies and they have all come to the same unanimous conclusion.

I will try to put together a summary of the latest handouts that are

distributed free of charge by all pharmacies over here outlining the

dangers of eating more than the recommended amounts (they are quite

small) of protein and fat. These handouts are based on the results of

the EURODIAB study conducted simultaneously in many European

countries. One thing I can tell you in advance though is that the

very serious health problems that we have here are clearly related to

the excessive consumption of protein (kidney disease) and fat (cardio-

vascular disease).

The 850,000 deaths in 1998 in Germany break down as follows:

Cardio-vascular 411,000

Cancer 213,000

Respiratory 49,000

Gastrointestinal and metabolism 41,000

Accidents 20,000

Suicide 12,000

Other causes 104,000

So cardio-vascular disease is the primary cause of death here and a

clear correlation has been shown between fat consumption and cardio-

vascular disease. Kidney disease has a great impact on health service

costs here and a clear correlation has been shown between protein

consumption (especially when accompanied by high blood pressure) and

kidney disease.

I hear what you say, Susie, but you must admit that it has got to

sound like a heresy over here, confronted as we are by overwhelming

evidence to the contrary.

But I am happy to have brought you out of retirement, Susie, even if

it is for only one post - the old list was just not the same without

you!

All,

I have done it again! Does anybody know how to stop Internet Explorer

5.5 from sending the same stuff twice? I only just updated from

version 5.0 and never had the problem before. I shudder to think how

long the digest is going to be if I keep this up!

Sorry, Folks!
