Guest guest
Hi guys, Just out of interest, for those of you who have been (or still are) on Pred, at what dose did you feel your side effects were minimal or pretty much nonexistent? I'm now down to 3.5mg (trying to drop 0.5 every 12 months or so) and have always been told that 5 or under was when side effects disappear but thought I'd ask those of us who actually take it! Guest guest
Hi Steve: I have been on Predisone since April 2009. Original dosage was 30MG - down to 20MG by August 2009.  December 2009 dosage down to 15 MG.  In 2010 reduced by 1MG every few months from 15MG to 12 MG. My labs were not the greatest that year.  In 2011 reduced from 12MG to 10MG then to 5MG and by November down to 3 MG. I had a great year.  As of Jan 2012 on 2 MG - going down to 1MG in April and off by summer. So far - best year.  As long as my labs showed counts as normal and no attacks dosage has been reduced.  Once I hit 5MG I had no side effects other than both hip joints affected.  Of course everyone is different when it comes to side effects.  I was a late comer to Stills. I did not have my first attack until April 2009 at which time I was 60 1/2 years of age.  in Phila. To: Stillsdisease Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2012 8:21 AM Subject: Prednisone: Side Effect Free Dose?  Hi guys, Just out of interest, for those of you who have been (or still are) on Pred, at what dose did you feel your side effects were minimal or pretty much nonexistent? Guest guest
Hi, I also came down with Still’s late at age 72, 14 months ago. Been trying to reduce Pred in stages. I’m down to 10 on latest try. I found that reducing too fast doesn’t work, as I have had symptoms re-occur twice below 10mg. Thanks to you and this group I’m learning patience and will go down much more slowly now. For others that have posted about exercise – my Still’s onset could have been related to that. Was trying to regain fitness after a hip replacement and pushed pretty hard. Guest guest
When I got down to 15 or so, my RD didn't have me drop down whole steps anymore. He had me alternate veery other day. IE 15 one day, 12 the next, 15 the next. 12 the next. He had me do this for a month or two before he let me go down to the 12. I continued doing it this way until I was completely off. I do remember around that time I got a cold and my lungs became inflamed so up went the sterroids and the tapering slowed yet again. He explained that this alternating dosing would help make the side effects less. It did make the tapering slower, but it worked. I can't really remember when the side effects were nill, but it seemed to work for me. April Sent from my Verizon Wireless Phone Prednisone: Side Effect Free Dose? Guest guest
I have no clue...I have been under 5mg for close to 3 years and I still feel some of the side effects. It was real bad a few weeks ago when I got nailed and had to jump it on a fast taper up to 60mg down to my regular 2 within a week! I thought my stomach was going to explode half of the time. I keep trying my ass off to get off of Prednisone, but it is taking me forever and a day! I can't wait (well, I really shouldn't say that as I don't like wishing my life by anymore) to get off of Pred forever! I think I'll get loaded that day....Just kidding...though I love my beer I have never been a heavy drinker and my RD would probably send me for 100 rectal exams as payback as he doesn't want me to have any beer what so ever....where as my Liver Specialist has told me that 1 or 2 beers every once in a while will not hurt me, but to not push it past that. I chose his advice. I'm not worried as I don't drink much or often. I think that since the Holidays I have had 8-10 beers total (including Christmas & New Years Eve) so I know I'm well under the line on that front. Later, Kirk. > ** > > > Hi guys, > > Just out of interest, for those of you who have been (or still are) on > Pred, at what dose did you feel your side effects were minimal or pretty > much nonexistent? > > I'm now down to 3.5mg (trying to drop 0.5 every 12 months or so) and have > always been told that 5 or under was when side effects disappear but > thought I'd ask those of us who actually take it! > > Steve > >

Guest guest
Hi Kirk, Regarding the alcohol and liver - do your own research on a supplement called Milk Thistle. I *know* this works, as I have Liver tests every 4 weeks, which check things such as liver enzymes. I started taking the Milk Thistle whilst drinking the same amount of alcohol and phoned up to check my blood results. As the receptionist isn't allowed to give them over the phone, one of the doctors called me back later that day. He said my liver enzymes were within normal limits for the first time in around 12 months. I told him about the Milk Thistle and all he said was, " Whatever you're doing - keep doing it, as your bloods are absolutely fine " . Google it and do your own research, but I drink 1 or 2 nights a week (and we're talking 10 pints of lager) and I'm on 12.5mg of MTX every Monday night, and my liver tests are normal. Guest guest
I'll look into it...but if I ever drank 12.5 pints in a day I'd probably drop dead! WOW! That's a lot of brew! If I go over 2 beers in an hour I have to stop as I absolutely despise not being in control of myself...so you could say when it comes to drinking I am a literal lightweight! I make up for it by drinking REAL BEER! My favorite is Sam , followed by 's Oatmeal Stout, followed by Mackeson XXX Stout and than Yuengling. I can NOT drink what most Americans consider beer (Bud/ etc) as it has no body and all tastes like piss. Guest guest
Haha, I know what you mean. I'm from near Manchester, England. 10 pints would be over the course of a night out, so about a pint every 45 minutes or so. I generally drink s, Carling, Carlsberg and the like. Never been a fan of bitter as it's just flat and I prefer a bit of a fizz! 330ml cans, I'll generally only have 8 if I'm staying at home, but only drink once a week and that's pretty much always on a Saturday or Sunday evening. If you have your liver checked out regularly, you'll know for yourself if the Milk Thistle helps as it'll show in your results. Keep me posted! If you have your liver checked out regularly, you'll know for yourself if the Milk Thistle helps as it'll show in your results. Keep me posted! I'll look into it...but if I ever drank 12.5 pints in a day I'd probably drop dead! WOW! That's a lot of brew! You'd like my Brother...he used to be able to put away a 30 pack in 6-7 hours. I used to get sick watching him pound brew after brew! PS...where are you from??? Guest guest
Wait a MINUTE! You live in " STONES-LAND " (I've been a die hard Rolling Stones fan since I was 2 or 3 when my parents tell me I used to try and sing along therefore England equals Stones-Land to me!) and you don't Drink SAM SMITHS or MACKESON??????????? Man, we need to trade places! If you've never had a Sam Boston Lager you must try one, as no other beer in the world has as complex of o flavor than it does, truly a work of art as far as brewing goes. To me Guiness is bitter, where as Sam & Mackeson are incredibly smooth. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Well, nice talking to you man! I have never really known anyone from across the pond. One of my best friends went to the University of Whales on a one year scholarship and outside of the weather he loved England. I'd like to see England, Germany & Italy......with a stop in Switzerland along the way... but that isn't very likely with my current financial situation, but I can dream! Later, Kirk. North-Eastern Pennsylvania between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, just outside of Pittston. PS...there is a specialty beer shop that opened up a mile or so from my house a couple of years ago and they tell me they are seeing a huge increase in the amount and variety of English Brews that people here are requesting. Over here everyone thinks Germ an beer is the best, and in Germany it may very well be, but the stuff we have offered to us as " German " tastes like PISS! One of my best friends is a PA State Trooper and was in Germany for Oktoberfest last year and said the stuff we have over here doesn't do German beer justice!
