Organ donors

I think that most of us don't even grasp the importance of donating organs

until our lives are touched by a disease such as PSC. I was always

reluctant to sign my donor card because of the unknown and I remember

watching Oprah one day and seeing a story on donors and families, and one

family's son was in a motorcycle accident and was declared brain dead at the

hospital, of course the father was approached to donate his organs, since

the parents were divorced he couldn't reach the mother for her consent, to

make a long story short, because of mis-communication the decision couldn't

be made, I was blown away when that particular boy came out on stage....had

they taken his organs he would have died, perhaps this is a rare story, the

show was on the pros and cons of organ donation and I'm sure this story

stuck in peoples minds, I know it did in mine, made me wonder, do they give

up on you too early for the sake of organ donations? Having said that, now

I have Mike in my life and I see the other side of the coin, the side that I

ignored and refused to face before he was diagnosed with this disease

because I didn't want to make that decision, now I am forced to look this

issue right in the face. Should I donate part of my liver to Mike? I don't

know what to do, I have four children and a little grandchild on the way, if

something happens to me, what will happen to them? Right now, I am the

primary income in the home, the rock, I don't know if I can risk my life

because of them....it's such a tough decision and situation,

before I got babbling I guess I was going to say that for alot of people

like Mike, by the time the importance of organ donation is realized some

people may not be healthy enough to give anything.
