Guest guest
We have soundproof windows, in addition to the original windows, and they have been a godsend, although one cannot forever live in a airless cube. Occasionally a breeze and the chirp of a bird is nice. Fortunately, the unit is only when the temperatures are above 50. And as the temps rise and other air conditioners join in it becomes much more bearable. And as I mentioned the situation with that particular unit is much improved, but I think I am forever changed. We did just repair our refrigerator, though, and the noise it makes now is unbearable to me. It makes me completely insane. I had a total and complete meltdown over it. It's a long story, and I won't bother you with all the details, but it hammered home the fact that I no longer have normal reactions to some noises. However, it is definitely not all noise. A building is being demolished and rebuilt just outside my window at work and I scarcely notice. It is sort of like a big mush of sound. I'm definitely selective in my annoyances. Do you know if any in the group have had success with meditation?Best,Gail Gail, I sympathize. I know several people who live near horrible ventilation noise. One suggestion for you is noise-cancelling headphones, which cancel out low throbs. Another is soundproof windows. In our building we don't have ventilation noise but we have noise from squealing breaks when the cars approach the light, as well as clinking bottles on trash and recycling day. When the sanitation trucks idle outside, the windows completely eliminate the throb. Soundproof windows are expensive but they really work and our quality of life has been improved a great deal. > > Good Morning. - I recently joined this group because I am often driven insane by the sounds of mechanical devices. It started when my New York City apartment building installed a large, somewhat DIY venting system a few stories below our livingroom window. The fight to quiet or limit its operation has dragged on for 10 years, although as of late I am happy to say it is the best it has ever been. However, the whole thing has left me sensitized to mechanical sounds. Furnaces, fridges, even the fans in computers. I also find music from neighbors infuriating, but I am the most concerned by my reaction to them all: I go from 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds. I can feel this sharp rise in anxiety that is different than the reaction of others. Am I in the right group? The sounds I hate seem to be sounds most everyone hates - just not as much. > > Kind Regards, > Gail >

Guest guest
I understand how it becomes less bothersome when more units quick on. My boyfriend and I like to go to the casino. I used to olay black jack a lot. As the years passed I could no longer bare to listen to the sound od people playing with their chips. Now I play slots. Someone asked me last night how I could stand the sound of all the dirrerent ringing and other sounds they make. They put slot machines in rows according to similarity in the game. They don't put two machines next together that make the same sound. There is such a cacophony of sounds that no one sound sticks out. On New years I was playing at a row with several people at 4 am when I heard the dreaded sound. I spun around and about 40 feet behind me, a lone man was plying black jack. He was playing with his chips. The repetitive sound made me so tense and angry that I had to move. Even though I was finally winning.
