Guest guest
Hi Gail, Not only is this the right group but I think we were separated at birth. I also live in NYC and am driven to the limits of my sanity by a restaurant ventilation system . The neighbor noise is a biggie for me as well, as it is for many on this board. I have additional triggers, but these are two whoppers for me. I can tell you that you have found a wonderful, caring community on this board. Welcome. I'm glad you found us. Regards Elaine > > Good Morning. - I recently joined this group because I am often driven insane by the sounds of mechanical devices. It started when my New York City apartment building installed a large, somewhat DIY venting system a few stories below our livingroom window. The fight to quiet or limit its operation has dragged on for 10 years, although as of late I am happy to say it is the best it has ever been. However, the whole thing has left me sensitized to mechanical sounds. Furnaces, fridges, even the fans in computers. I also find music from neighbors infuriating, but I am the most concerned by my reaction to them all: I go from 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds. I can feel this sharp rise in anxiety that is different than the reaction of others. Am I in the right group? The sounds I hate seem to be sounds most everyone hates - just not as much. > > Kind Regards, > Gail >

Guest guest
Sounds like the right group to me. I also am bothered by even the very lowest of hums from machines. It does not help that I am surrounded by them at work. One I shake until it becomes quiter, one I can kick in a certain location and the sound changes to something more tollerable. And one cooler I just simply unplug until I calm down a little. These sounds are fairly new to me, about a year, so I try really hard not to fixate on them. They make me upset, but I can controll that, tapping and other repetitive sounds are what make me go from 0-60. I think because people have control over this. They don't have to do it and if they do, they don't need to come sit near me. Also (other than one time in particular) I can control them. I am able to say " I'm so sorry, but can I ask you to please not do that. I know it sounds weird, but it actually causes me chest pain " 99% of people are accomidating and even apologise for doing it. If you find something new start to bother you, don't obsess over it. Try verfy hard to distract yourself and walk away if you can. Triggers seem to add up as you get older. I do think if you realize it soon enough, you can block out some of the new ones. Welcome. You will only find comfort and support here. Sent from my Samsung Interceptâ„¢

Guest guest
Gail, I sympathize. I know several people who live near horrible ventilation noise. One suggestion for you is noise-cancelling headphones, which cancel out low throbs. Another is soundproof windows. In our building we don't have ventilation noise but we have noise from squealing breaks when the cars approach the light, as well as clinking bottles on trash and recycling day. When the sanitation trucks idle outside, the windows completely eliminate the throb. Soundproof windows are expensive but they really work and our quality of life has been improved a great deal. > > Good Morning. - I recently joined this group because I am often driven insane by the sounds of mechanical devices.
