Question about noise canceling headphones

I'm confused about noise canceling headphones. Do they help block out the annoying sounds or are they designed to let you listen to music more clearly? I looked at some today and it seemed like they were more for listening to music.I'd like to use some sort of headphones while I'm working and studying. I don't want to listen to music (too distracting). What do others do? Thanks!Corey

When they're activated, they'll do noise cancellation, whether you are listening

to music or not. Of course you can always listen to music through them as well.

They work best for decreasing the volume of " white noise " -- fans, airplane

engine noise, etc...

Non-constant noises are only muffled a bit.

One thing I've done is employ white noise to mask annoying noises, and then use

noise canceling headphones to decrease the volume of the white noise.
