Guest guest
Hi Whitney, Welcome again :0) My pain managment doctor first determined what I had used over the years with all forms of pain management. We then determined what combinations of medications I had taken, could take and what we would try to control my pain now and then ajusted as needed. I see him every month on a stricktly scheduled basis becasue refills through him are not called in. It is a good experience because he is a good doctor. Wishing you well with your decisions. My question tonight is I'd like to know if anyone goes to a pain management clinic and more information on them. I use pain medication on a nightly bases, and my rheumy has no problem giving it to me so far. He understands that I need it, but it has gotten harder to get a hold of him for refills lately. I do not know much about what a pain management doctor does for you exactly, so any information will help! Thanks so much!

I just joined the group and am excited to be able to share my story with others and hopefully learn something new. I was diagnosed with Systemic JRA when I was one year old, and I am 24 now. Living with JRA is all I've known but I am totally okay with that. I have been on numerous medications. Some have been a blessing and others not so much. Guest guest
Welcome Whitney! So glad you decided to join the support group. I myself am a Mother of a 29 year old daughter with Still’s disease. I come here to learn and be resourceful as well as give my encouragement to others from my own experience with other auto immune disorders. As far as a pain clinic. I have found that they are somewhat difficult to deal with and many I’ve come across have the main objective of getting people off of pain medication when they need it. My best bet is to go to my regular doctor and he takes care of my prescriptions for pain. Although he is not fond of just refilling them by phone. Each month he wants an office visit where he and I can sit down and discuss the medications and how they are working for me. I believe there is a certain amount of time in which a doctor can just keep prescribing Class C drugs without actually having seen the patient. I signed a written contract when I started pain management with my doctor that stated I was to be checked monthly. I hope you get this nipped in the bud before it gets to the point that you start running out of your medicine and go through being without. ~~~ ~~~ From: whitney Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2012 9:18 PM To: Stillsdisease Subject: New to the group, pain management. Guest guest
Hi Whitney....My daughter has had Systemic JIA for almost 9 years now and is 23. With the severity of her illness, and secondaries, we have moved near the hospital for her treatments. She utilizes the same facility for all her docs and treatments so they know everything about her. Their pain management team knows Hadleigh well and they work with her on tapering some of her baseline meds as well as newer issues that may require a different kind of med. Pain management teams/clinics are well versed in their specific field and work with your rheum doc. She has required specific assistance with surgeries and they have helped her tremendously. I don't know your situation/location, but for us...I usually email them with any questions and refills and they drop off a slip in their outpatient pharmacy. When necessary, they will require an echo and review the labs that her rheum doc has drawn regularly. Of course, we see them when it is necessary. They have helped Hadleigh tremendously. *On a personal note, I have used a pain management clinic for my issues in the past as well. Mine is mainly back pain. They were great; however, each time that I needed a refill, I had to make an appt. and that was not very convenient.... That has been our experience...Hope that this helped. Guest guest
Thank you for your feedback! I was hesitant about it at first because I kind of felt like this was kind of the end for me, but it is not at all. I think going to one will allow my Rheumy to focus on my RA completely instead of having to control pain as well. Is a pain management doctor the same as going to a clinic? I have problems with my neck as well, it always feels like it is in knots and muscle relaxers dont really help anymore. I am hoping a pain mgmt doctor can help with that as well. > > > Hi Whitney, Welcome again :0) My pain managment doctor first determined what I had used over the years with all forms of pain management. Guest guest
Thank you so much for your feedback! I go back to my rheumy on the 24th of this month and I am going to talk to him about it. My doctor has never said anything about giving me pain medication, but it is a hassle to get a refill if I need it. I never know when I am going to need to from taking it 2 times a day to 3 times a day, so knowing how much I need gets confusing. I'd love to get off pain medication, but I am not going to just be in constant pain either. Glad you have had a good experience with your pain mgmt. > > Hi Whitney....My daughter has had Systemic JIA for almost 9 years now and is 23.
