Guest guest
I would expect that most people's ferritin levels would be normal for many years after their PSC is evident. During that time their iron level should drop as their disease progresses. Percent saturation should decrease as well. Eventually the ferritin level make become abnormally low. Especially if they have a variceal bleed which removes iron, hemaglobin etc from the body permanently. Transfusion will bring the hemaglobin back up but not the iron and ferritin levels. Ferritin is the storage from of iron in the body and is relatively stable over time. It depends upon good nutrition and resonable amount of iron losses. Obviously most pre-menopausal women have lower ferritin and iron levels and have more reason to be attentive to making sure they ingest enough iron on a regular basis in their diet or as supplements.
