The first step is knowing that you have to do something. The second

step is knowing what you have to do to achieve it. The third step is

getting out there and tearing it a new one. It is now time for you to

get out there and tear it a new one. Shine on.

I'll remember to e-mail you then and see how close you are to your goal.

Brett, Greg,

...And all those thinking 40 is on the over the hill side of things.

Stop! You're scaring me of hitting 40. ...And, I AM in my 40's. Now,

officially late 40's. ...47 to be exact, although earlier this month I

thought I was 48, but that's a whole other story on aging. :)

If I remember right, at 40, I was...

Changing careers, from internal CIO, back to an IT consultant.

Preparing the way for babies #7 & #8.

Just starting to feel the stress of college tuition with babies #1 & #2.

Rekindling a business application & integration family business.

Horribly out of shape and self destructing quickly.

Still recovering from a previous business disaster.

As I progressed through my 40's, I have been...

Reasonably successful at the career transition.

...But, still wondering what it is I want to do when I grow up.

Attending pre-K and grade school functions for babies #5, 6, 7 & 8.

...And suffering greatly with the loss of my youngest daughter

to leukemia.

Seeing the light at the end of the near term college tuition

financial tunnel.

...At least for the last of the first (older) 4 children.

Able to marry off two daughters and celebrated the engagement of my

third.

...And have very recently realized the greatness of being a

YOUNG grandpop.

Have reduced the old tonderella body down to a manageable size.

...And built up muscle mass greater than when wrestling and

weight lifting in high school.

And the things I have yet to look forward to...

The proper career selection, for when I grow up.

Heading back to school to get more smarts. Maybe even a degree in

psychobabble!

Having the houses eventually paid off - for good.

Purchasing sportier performance sedans rather than than 7 to 12

passenger vehicles.

Spoiling my grand children, then sending them back to their parents

all wired up.

Dirt biking and snow tubing with the children.

Cleaning up and shrinking down the clutter in my homes.

Eventually benching and curling almost as much as Brett.

Frequent and even GREATER enjoyment of the intimate side of life.

Living another 50 years to enjoy my Disney Vacation Club benefits to

their max.

So... 40 isn't the ending, you are just now arriving at the starting

gate. Where you decide to take your cruise ship (or speed boat) is

entirely up to you. If you want to hide it under a rock, I would

consider that a waste, but, I'm sure there are some that truly get

depressed enough about that magical 40 to do just that. Life in general

can be much like BFL, you can take it to what ever level you want. You

are at the controls. Everything external to your own thoughts are

simply speed bumps that you decide on how to maneuver.

My best wishes for a happy birthday are extended to all you New Years

and nearly New Years day babies. Your best gift to yourself???

Restoring your positive attitude and your sense of humor.

Enjoying my short sabbatical, I remain...

Your BFL'er for life,

Brett,

Yes... With two of my babies now married and out, one moved on to

heaven, and the two older ones at college and engaged, we'll, for sure,

be shrunken down into a 5 passenger car. Long gone are the years living

with a 12 passenger extended van. We will ( & can) all now easily fit

into my wife's little Rav4.

In fact, my mid-life crisis convertible is only a 4 passenger. Meaning,

my 3 little boys and me OR my wife and me only. Gee... Aside from

being limited with the season, I can pretty much use that only if we are

not going out as a family, otherwise, for now, it's generally my Texas

Cadillac (Suburban).

As for the weights... On a good day, I'm up to the 6x set with the 60#

pair on the seated bench curls. I might be able to do 12 standing

hammer curls with them, but that's more swinging than it is curling. I

thought you were now tipping at 70#. Plus, you have me by MORE than 50#

on the bench presses, so I have a big effort yet ahead of me to catch

up. I still have those lofty goals, but, I am feeling like there is a

limit that I'm poking up against.

Now where did I put that snow tube???

See ya!

Happy New Year!

I just added it to the calendar. We'll get a reminder a few days

before Brett's 60th birthday in 2027. I'll only be 59. Sort of like

a time capsule thing. Reminds me of this service I read about the

other day sending people e-mails in the future. There's a service

that will send you an e-mail at any time in the future or will send an

e-mail to your family after when you leave this earth.
