Usually when you are intubated, the Dr. hyperextends the neck and uses a metal blade to hold the tongue out of the way and inserts the endotracheal tube (ETTube) into the airway. The Dr. can use a bronchoscope, which is a small flexible scope that has a light at the end. Before inserting this, the Dr. puts the ETTube on the scope, inserts the scope into the trachea (without hyperextending the neck as much), then slides the ETTube into place.
