Hi everyone. I am hoping you can help. I went to the rheumy about 2

months ago. He didn't diagnose me (I have an appointment on Monday) but I

am in some serious pain.- it is in my neck shoulders, forearms, knees, feet

etc etc. Some days are worse than others. When I first went to my Primary

doc he prescribed some Darvocet and I have been taking one at night and one

in the morning for pain. It works fairly well. Anyway, I have 2 questions.

....does this sound like RA? I had always assumed that RA affected the joints

and not the muscle areas. My second question is does anyone know how I can

get my doc to prescribe something for the pain? Most docs don't like

prescribing pain meds because you might get addicted I guess. Well, I don't

know about you guys but if I had a choice between the pain and addiction I

would choose addiction any day. The pain is so constant---it is really

wearing me down. Sorry to be so long winded and thanks to anyone who can

help.

Suzanne, your doctors should work with you to help manage your pain. If

not, it's time to find new ones. There are many strategies and

medications available. Working with a pain management specialist is

another option if your physicians aren't experienced in treating chronic

nonmalignant pain.

Addiction in people taking opioids prescribed for serious chronic pain

is uncommon. Dependence is common but is not a good reason for avoiding

opioids.

Getting the right diagnosis is the first step to finding the right

strategy to manage your pain.

Yes, joint pain rather than muscle pain is more characteristic of

rheumatoid arthritis. Let us know what your rheumatologist tells you

Monday.

I'll tell you where to go!
