For all the brewhaha the DSM5 committee has been having with the American

public, the tables have begun to turn on the committee that much more.

Because there is little activity going on the aspires group as this time, I will

post the article in full length (not much anyway) instead of posting a link.

Should be intersting to see your reactions to this. I am looking to see what can

be done in Tennessee to pass a similar bill. I will be representing only myself

and not any groups (e.g. Greater Chattanooga Aspies/Chattanooga Autism Center

Inc.)

Bill Limiting the DSM5 Passes Illinois Legislature

First in the US

by Autism Society of Illinois

A legal bill that would limit the impact of the Diagnostic and Statistical

Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM5) passed both Houses of the Illinois State

Legislature and is awaiting the signature of Governor Pat Quinn.

This bill provides a firm statement of no confidence by the State of Illinois in

the American Psychiatric Association's bungling of the DSM5.

Senate Bill S679 would allow people with a current diagnosis under the DSM4

criteria to keep their autism diagnosis regardless of what happens with the

DSM5. This is an important first step to protecting people with autism from the

reckless changes in diagnostic criteria proposed for the DSM5. This bill

provides a firm statement of no confidence by the State of Illinois in the

American Psychiatric Association's bungling of the DSM5.

The DSM is the document written by the American Psychiatric Association (APA)

that defines mental health disorders and the criteria used to diagnose them. A

new definition of autism is proposed for the DSM5 which would result in a huge

reduction in the number of people with an autism diagnosis.
