I am a part timer at my agency. We are used to fill open shifts, sick time,

vacation etc. Our full time dispatchers also work w/ permanent days off, they

all have weekiends off. So the part timers are used to fill all the shifts on

the weekends as well. Any open shifts including weekends go to the full

timers first (they never take them, ever) and then on to the part timers, we

fill the shifts according to seniority, and will either put out a page, or

call through the list. The part timers do not have set schedules, but i

prefer 4-12's and one of the others prefers 8-4's. since we have seniority we

basically work the same shifts on weekends all the time. It works out well,

we are treated as equals and the officers love us, since we do not work as

much as the full timers we don't " get on there nerves " as much as the full

timers. Also we need to be SPOTS/NCIC certified just like everyone else. My

dept, unfortunatley is not big on training so that is the only requirement.

Howeer coming from another dept i am also APCCO,EMD, and POWERPHONE

certified. I keep this trainig up, to better the citizens i serve, even

though they mayu not get the same level of service if someone else answers

the phone. But also so if i go to a dept that requires the Certifications i

would have a leg up on the other candidates. If you have any questions about

our policies w/ part timers you can call me at work. if i am not there, tell

them who you are and have them page me. the number at work is
