I always check in Navarro first and then in other sources. Mosby is also

good. Remember that having at least two sources where to check terminology

is better than one. If you have the possiblity of having three dictionaries,

better...

A few comments on dictionaries: I'd be interested to hear disagreements or

The Navarro " Diccionario crítico de dudas inglés - español de medicina "

(pub. McGraw-Hill Interamericana second edition 2005) is worth having even

for translation in the other direction, as it (or rather he) _discusses_

both Spanish and English usage.

Others I have come across which are useful for understanding Spanish

terminology:

the Mosby dictionary (Diccionario Mosby de Medicina, enfermería y ciencias

de la salud, sexta edicion 2003 pub. Elsevier Science) is a translation of

Mosby's Medical, Nursing and Allied Health dictionary. It is pretty

thorough and seems to me worthwhile: I'd be interested in comments from

the Spanish speaking side. It consists of a monolingual Spanish dictionary

with descriptions in Spanish and a one-word English version of the term

concerned, with a short bilingual dictionary at the back.

This is useful in conjunction with the Dorlands dictionary to compare

terminology.

I'll try posting again:

There seems to be a pretty good consensus as to what's needed.

Trouble is that some of these works come with a hefty price tag, and

aren't always immediatebly available, except for maybe Mosby in

paperback at Amazon.com selling at 95-some dollars. I guess I'll go

for that one, then. Gotta check my usual supply sources first,

though.

Maybe we could put some of these dix to a test. What is said about

autorrevelación and its translation into English?

I've now downloaded the trial version which is good for 15 days.

This concerns only Spanish and English, whether other languages are

covered in the many works listed there, well, I'll just have to look

around on that site.

" Autorrevelacion " was not included in that Word Magic dix & tools

medicine, but some close words were. Interestingly, the Diccionario

Espasa Medicina did, so I went ahead and ordered it.

Okay, perfect!

I can report from trying out some of the Spanish electronic ones

offered for trial at the above-mentioned site that I get the feel

that they are more like glossaries, i.e., compendiums of just words

and synonyms stripped of context, although I am certainly not

disputing their usefulness, if that's what you like.

Dear Yngve,

I've been off line because of my ISP being down. Whilst it may be more

expensive I personally would go for the Mosby dictionary in preference to

Espasa if you're only going for one(I'm talking about hard copies). It's

more comprehensive. If you want to try out a word or two by all means

contact me privately and I'll look a couple up.
