Guest guest
There is a lot of concern about false calls to 9-1-1 from ACN(Auto Crash Notification) type systems, and of course some are justified. I guess we have to weigh the pros and cons. In the State of New York, the 9-1-1 Coordinators along with the state sheriff's assoc., and a host of other concerned groups of people including the ER Physicians linked with the NHSTA / DOT have been meeting about cellular 9-1-1 routing and a myriad of other issues surrounding our business ---- anyway, I don't want to get off on some tangent here...During a couple of meetings, we have seen presentations showing some of the data. And I mean data sent from the vehicle involved in a crash. There is an orginization in the Buffalo, NY area, SCC Communications http://www.scc911.com/ and others have presented information that is truly impressive. Last June, we saw the animation from a test crash. Two dummies were in a vehicle, one belted, one not. The vehicle was outfitted with ACN product. I'll make a long story short here. At the time of impact, the ACN hardware collected the " pulse " from the crash. Information was relayed via cellular mechanism to (theoretically) a 9-1-1 center and hospital ER. It (the animation) showed the almost-exact movements of the two " passengers " . The doctors in the group were really excited as they were able to examine the crash data and make a relatively intelligent determination of the mechanism of injuries. The ACN also transmitted the number of occupants, approximate weights, approximate G-forces, etc. Earlier this month, I saw the SCC presentation that further expanded the crash. The mock MVA was in Buffalo. Data was sent to SCC in Boulder, CO and then on to a hospital in County (Houston), TX. --- All of this happened in less than four minutes. Check out the SCC website http://www.scc911.com/ and they have a video available too. Some of the leading edge technology is scarry because we have to defend our positions as communicators and leaders in " this " field, to protect the public we serve; and on the other hand, we must cautiously embrace new technology as aiding us in doing our jobs a little better. There are actually some companies linked to our profession that are as concerned about public safety as we are. Nick Wagner Senior Communications Supervisor Cortland Co.
