Guest guest
, May God bless you and your family. I know how you feel as I (and my family) also care for an aging parent with very limited mobility. And yes! I have done a whole lot of wrestling with this issue, myself. In fact, my wrestling and lack of focus cost me many, many pounds of indecision before I realized what I was doing to myself. You MUST consider your health first! Think of it like the airplane mask condition, if you don't take care of yourself first, you may not be available to care for others. As of today, it has been 7 months and I am still adjusting to the changed schedule, but, I often have the convenience of working out in my own home. Making the time and actually doing your exercises will help with your mental well being and, if you can add in prayer while you perform your cardio or resistance exercises, all the better. So, what you feel like you should avoid to be of better service to your family, may in fact be EXACTLY what you need to do to be of better service to both you AND your family. Take the time, make the time, and just do it! .And don't STOP at week 13. Make it your lifestyle. You can do it! We can help. Guest guest
, Thanks for the kind words and inspiration. I also look at my Mother and realize that here is a women who thought that exercize was a four letter word. Not to be cruel, but in many respects, I have decided that I do not want that lifestyle and have such health problems when I reach her age. I may or may not but certainly a lifestyle change is heading down the right path. many thanks again, --- gholowko wrote: > , > > > > May God bless you and your family. Guest guest
, I suppose the generation older than myself, basically thought that there was sufficient exercise in our life when we worked hard. At least that's my dad's thoughts. He was " active " with his work until he retired, maybe, 7 or 8 years ago. And that's when his decline in different areas started. My dad has no idea why I exercise like I do. He comments. " You and your damned exercises " .like it is an evil habit. I continue to tell him that I do it to remain healthy and it gives me the strength and stamina to help him and all my children. My life is otherwise behind a desk and / or a computer with no real physical effort required on a regular basis. My lack of exercise, my type of employment and my sedentary lifestyle are how I got to be SOOOOO BIG to begin with, and I NEVER want to return to the discomfort, pain & health problems associated with that " effortless " lifestyle. My dad had a physical therapist working with me to provide him some basic, healthy exercises to keep him stronger and remain flexible, but, I suppose he looked at that as too much like work. He did then with the therapist, like a good patient, but, will not do them with me or on his own unless feeling like an outsider should make him do this. He certainly does NOT like to experience the " good " pain, but, of course, at 77+ years of age, maybe there is no such thing as " good " pain. :-) The lack of desire to exercise or even tolerate others exercising is more pervasive than simply our elders. It took a while to convince even my wife that this (BFL) was real and worthwhile. But, after about a year and after shedding my first 100 pounds, she started believing. And, after more than a year and a half, she started joining in the fun and sweat, as did my older children. I think my continued efforts have set a better example of fitness for my children, and I am just happy they were able to learn that lesson from me. Now my task is to find out how to get my dad back to some kind of exercise program. If you (or anyone) figures out the right way to package this, please share it with me. Just be sure to keep in control of your own fitness destiny. It is worth it! - - - - - Holowko, CPA, CCP PO Box 444 Lafayette Hill, PA 19444-0444 - - - - - Telephone: - - - - - E-mailto:gholowko@... - - - - - Remember... Has changed her diet somewhat to help lower her BP meds (read: limit salt, I think). No " gee, that's great " or " when will you be competing so I can come and watch and cheer you on " . Almost all of both our families are very non-supportive of us, tho our #2 ;son and his wife came to 2 of them. Guest guest
, LOL, LOL, LOL. I hope you never take that personally. I often mention my " tighty whities " , but that's a nickname my kids have dubbed my gym / workout outfits. .It's NOT me in my undies! Anyhow, although these are clothes that can, and are made to, be worn outside, my older kids get the heebie-jeebies if the so much as see me anywhere in the house with only these clothes on. When I was all excited about my upper arm measures and I showed my older daughter, instead of a " congrats " , she screamed for me never to come into her room wearing those clothes, again. Of course, they also dread when my schedule requires that I perform an afternoon or evening workout as that means there is an even greater chance at having their friends also see me in my " tighty-whities " . :-) I AM one of those folks that may NEVER look good in a speedo, but, age and being a parent should NOT be one of the governing factors. In your case, feel free to keep on wearing those stringed cocktail napkins and speedos! :-) IMHO - You two look marvelous! - - - - - Holowko, CPA, CCP PO Box 444 Lafayette Hill, PA 19444-0444 - - - - - Telephone: - - - - - E-mailto:gholowko@... - - - - - Remember... Guest guest
families are good but sometimes not so good. My mom as my sister says will suck you dry with her constant help me do this and that when she can do 90% of, fortunately sister read her the riot act and said we know you are sick but you have to help your self...so some hurt feelings...but I am able to get to the gym for an hour or so and do my thing...my sister like most women are much tougher and easily recognize a problem and addressed it. so she helped me get some time built into my schedule. --- Zettle wrote: > Well, then, you have MY mother.............at 76, > she looks " decent " , but still out of shape. Eastern Daylight Time, jcollins2624@... writes: I did go last night to the gym...late..I di did back and tri's real good workout...today I ran for 1/2 an hour and did abs. EXCELLENT! That's the way to dig deep..Here's a lil' something for you from starttodayfitness.com, a website of two bfl champs: Week 6 “Wow. That was cool!†Sometime between weeks 5 and 8, many competitors find themselves on the verge of frustration, wondering why results are slower than they’d hoped them to be. Then it happens. You catch a glimpse in the mirror. You put on a pair of pants. You run in to someone you haven’t seen for a while and they don’t recognize you. Suddenly, you notice a surprise change. In fact, it’s almost unbelievable. I remember the day I was at my Mom’s house; I hopped on the scales and was taken back! My weight had dropped 15 pounds from the last time I had weighed. I was in utter disbelief and literally stood there, in the bathroom, for 2 minutes. (I’m surprised the weight of my jaw dropping on the scales didn’t exceed the 15 pounds I’d lost). When I walked out to the living room, Gino said I was pale as a ghost. “What happened?†he asked. “I just dropped to 135.†It may have already happened, or it may be just around the corner. Don’t give up on yourself. You are building a better YOU every day. Everyone is different. If you’re finding more questions than answers, get out your journal and write down what you’re thinking! You’ll be amazed what you find out about yourself when you force your thoughts onto paper. This is a good time to talk again about your weight versus your other health monitors. As I mentioned, I did drop weight in my first challenge. Ever since then, my weight has remained pretty constant. If I continue to train right and eat right, yet I don’t lose weight, am I really making a difference? Yes. Muscle weighs more than fat. As your body transforms you lose fat and gain muscle. You gain muscle. Isn’t it good to lose a pound of fat? Isn’t it good to gain a pound of lean muscle? If you do BOTH, will you notice ANYTHING on the scales? Of course not! Sometimes I even gain weight! As long as I continue to train right and eat right, follow the program and stay on track, I’m remaining true to myself. Always remain true to YOURself. Guest guest
had asked about a way to encourage his father to get fit... I am not sure we can give someone else motivation, but here's a try; It's a book, " Strength Training Past 50 " . The author, Westcott, works for the YMCA promoting strength training for fitness. All the photos are of people with their conservative workout clothing on Honestly, I think the midriff and skimpy clothing of most professional body builders are clashing with feelings of modesty of most conservative folks over age 50 in our world Ebay has a copy for under $10. http://cgi.ebay.com/Strength-Training-Past-50-NEW-Westcott-Wayne-L-Baech _W0QQitemZ250036533317QQihZ015QQcategoryZ378QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewIte\ m The other thing that would have quite an effect is a tour of the local nursing home. Tour the halls full of wheelchair bound and also take a peek at the exercise classes of the more active. Those folks know; " use it, or lose it " . Generally, the elderly aren't so motivated by how they look in a pair of shorts, but most of them really do want to hang onto enough muscle tone to carry their own grocerys, avoid/recover from a fall, or get themselves on and off the toilet unassisted. This book has a quick evaluation for muscle strength. The instructions are on page 17. Basically, it's squats (almost sitting onto a chair). This came up when I Googled " " leg strength test " AND seniors " ; From the Canadian Orthopaedic Assn.... " Fall prevention can be thought of as either `primary' prevention – preventing falls among `healthy' seniors before they have their first fall, or `secondary' fall prevention which involves ensuring that, after a fall, the patient benefits from an intervention. In this section we discuss each of these in turn. Primary prevention: As with primary prevention for overall health, childhood and adult behaviours play an important role in determining whether a `healthy' 80-year old has good pre-existing strength, balance, vision etc. However, as it is too late to turn back the clock , the good news is that there are many things an 80-year old, non-faller can do to prevent a first fall. The most important of these is strength and balance training. This type of training can be done at home, using a bench for support in the first instance. The person can use the activity of getting up from a chair as a leg strengthening mechanism. Leg weights are rather cheap and these enhance the progressive challenge that enables the person to become stronger. Details of the most-studied, effective strength and balance training programme for seniors aged 80 years can be found on the web at http://www.acc.co.nz/wcm001/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE & ssDocName=WCM002143 & ss\ SourceNodeId=3996. Also, with seniors, a private call to their physician and a request to have the doctor present the " prescription " for exercise can do more than hearing it from the relatives. Keep praying and model fitness. Your example is planting seeds that you may never know. M.

I am not sure we can give someone else motivation, but here's a try; It's a book, " Strength Training Past 50 " . The author, Westcott, works for the YMCA promoting strength training for fitness. All the photos are of people with their conservative workout clothing on Honestly, I think the midriff and skimpy clothing of most professional body builders are clashing with feelings of modesty of most conservative folks over age 50 in our world Ebay has a copy for under $10. http://cgi.ebay. <http://cgi.ebay.com/Strength-Training-Past-50-NEW-Westcott-Wayne-L-Baech> com/Strength-Training-Past-50-NEW-Westcott-Wayne-L-Baech _W0QQitemZ250036533317QQihZ015QQcategoryZ378QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZVie wItem The other thing that would have quite an effect is a tour of the local nursing home. " Fall prevention can be thought of as either `primary' prevention - preventing falls among `healthy' seniors before they have their first fall, or `secondary' fall prevention which involves ensuring that, after a fall, the patient benefits from an intervention. In this section we discuss each of these in turn.
