HI,

I have a question. My rhuemo labs are all normal except for c-reactive

protein. He is treating me for psoriatic arthritis with Celebrex and Salfazine.

I

am overweight and have high blood pressure. Cholesterol is fair to good. My

dad didn't eat red meat for 20 years and had fantastically low cholesterol.

Last year, out of the blue he needed a quadruple bypass. I am 45. Should I be

on a statin? Is anyone else in a similar situation and what has your doctor

told you?

Nedra, you've asked some complicated questions. Hereditary factors

should most definitely be taken into account when considering your risk

for heart disease.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is linked to heart disease, high blood

pressure, obesity, smoking, inflammation, and other lifestyle choices

and conditions.

I believe you should try to modify any negative lifestyle choices you

can before considering a statin. If you can attempt to lose weight, make

healthy dietary changes (cut down on sodium intake for sure), and

exercise more, that would be a good start. I am uncomfortable

recommending a statin above non-drug solutions.

What does your doctor advise?
